__/ ZANGLIN DOWNRIVER RUN CELEBRATES 20TH
ANNIVERSARY
Eve Howell reminds us that this Friday marks the 20th
Anniversary for the
Zanglin Downriver Run: "Formerly known as the Downriver
Treadmill Run,
this run was started by a group called the Downriver
Treadmill Team.
Spearheaded by a local cardiologist, this group was
comprised mostly of
heart attack patients who formed a walking group. They put
on this
successful event for 10 years and then said, 'That's it. We're
done.' If
you were at the race that year you heard runners complain
saying "How
could they stop doing this? It's my favorite race." Well, one
guy stood up
and said, "I'll take it over." His name....Jim Zanglin. For the
past 10
years Jim has been the race chairman for this event. If you
knew Jim, I'm
sure you would like him tremendously. He is a fun-loving,
honest man, who
is dedicated to fitness and his community. This was a
perfect fit. This
Friday, June 14 the streets of Trenton will fill again for this
'Trenton
Tradition'."
The 1 mile fun run starts at 7:00 pm; the 8K race starts at
7:30 pm, and
the not-to-be-missed street party follows the races. The 8K
is the
Michigan Runner Race Series 8K Championship race.

__/ FEDEROV WANTS TO RUN A MARATHON
After Saturday night/Sunday morning's triple-overtime
Stanley Cup finals
game, Detroit Red Wing Sergei Fedorov, said one of the
things he wants to
do after his hockey career is run a marathon. "Ithink now I've
already
done that," he said.
__/ CARTER SHERLINE--DEDICATED MARATHONER
ANDN MULTASKER
Michigan Runner photographer Carter Sherline runs
marathons--lots of them.
At last count he'd run more than 330. While Carter was in
the midst of
logging another one at the Sunburst marathon in South
Bend, Indiana on
Saturday, he made some phone calls. One of them was to
me; we discussed
photos to be published in the July/August 2002 Michigan
Runner. Carter
sounded only a little breathless.
__/ ROSE RUN ON MICHIGAN RUNNER TV
This week the Michigan Runner takes you to the 32nd

Dave Furey and race

the women's
masters champion, and David Kimeli of South Bend,
Indiana was the overall
male winner, allowing 2nd place Aaron Usher of Gregory to
earn the
Michigan race series points. http://michiganrunner.tv.

STATE FINALS--UP
Our report last week on the MHSAA State Finals was for
Michigan's Lower
Peninsula. This week we bring you excerpts from John
Carlson's report on
Upper Peninsula action on June 1.
"The U.P. Finals were held in Kingsford, MI today under
beautiful
conditions, sunny, warm mid 70s, a little breeze from the
NNW. Kingsford
had tons of volunteers and the meet flowed very smoothly.
The biggest
effort of the day in my opinion may have been turned in by
Pickford senior
Ashley Bishop. She threw the shot put 42' 00.5" for her third
title in a
row; she also won the discus for the third year in a row.
Amber Smith [10th grade] from Ishpeming Westwood also
had a huge day. She
blasted around the track in the 3200 relay in 2:15 but her
effort to
overtake hancook fell just short, Hancock 10:10.1 and
Westwood 10:11.3.
Then in the 1600 run she ran 5:04.1, running the last lap in
80.1.
Several spectators thought the 800 could be a "tougher
race" for her as
she seemed drained in the last 100 meters of the 1600, but
she dominated
the 800. Smith ran 2:20.2 to hold off Krista Clement [10th
grade] of St.
Ignace who ran 2:22.7. Amber finished off her day by
cruising the 3200 in
11:49.9. Smith's Westwood Patriots took the team title.
__/ TIM BROE WINS HOMETOWN RACE
Tim Broe came close to winning his hometown race last
year--The Steamboat
Classic 4 Mile in Peoria, Illinois, but his 17:46 was good for
second
place. Last Saturday, though, Tim got the victory he wanted.
The 17:46
put him more than 4 seconds ahead of second place Evans
Rutto of Kenya.
Michigan native Todd Williams, now of Knoxville,
Tennessee, placed 5th and
Jeff Campbell of Rochester, Michigan finished 9th.
