__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
""Before the race, I was listening to everybody yell my name,"
Brannen
said, "and I had to go to the backstretch to do my strides
because I
was getting pretty emotional listening to everybody basically
go nuts for
me."
-- Nate Brannen, Cambridge Classic Mile, quoted by
Richard O'Brien in
therecord.com, June 12, http://www.therecord.com.
Brannen (Reebok/
Michigan/ ambridge HS, Ont) finished half a step behind
defending champion
Labin Rotich. Both were timed at 4:09.1 on the crushed clay
brick
track, installed to produce the type of surface Roger
Bannister and his
fellow competitors were racing on in the 1950's.

__/ RITZ TO DEBUT AT ING NEW YORK CITY MARATHON -
Dathan Ritzenhein, age 23, will make his marathon debut at
the ING New
York City Marathon on November 5.
"I want to debut in the marathon now because it is the right
choice for
my career," said Ritzenhein, of Boulder, Colorado, at a news
conference
in Denver on June 1. "My main goal on November 5 will be
to get in the
heat of the race and see how well I can hang with the best
runners in
the world. The other runners will have the experience that I
don't have,
but I want to see how I compare against them. If I train smart
and race
tough, I think I can be up there."
Ritzenhein, the first professional athlete announced for the
marathon,
was presented with a ceremonial marathon bib by NYRR
president and CEO
and marathon race director Mary Wittenberg.
"Dathan's decision to run in New York sets up one of the
most
anticipated marathon debuts by an American ever," said
Wittenberg. "We salute
him for taking such a bold step at this point in his career,
and we're
confident we'll see a spectacular showing from him."
Last November, Ritzenhein saw the ING New York City
Marathon up close,
accompanying Wittenberg in the lead vehicle. And he had
been thinking
about his marathon debut well before that, having
discussed it with his
coach, the Boulder Performance Training Group's Brad
Hudson, as early
as 2004. He says that laboratory testing indicates the
marathon will be
his strongest event.
"The ING New York City Marathon is the place to do
something special,"
said Ritzenhein. "If I do as well as I think I can, hopefully that
will
contribute to the momentum that is already driving American
distance
running to a new level."
-- ING New York City Marathon Press Release
