Lela Nelson, Sr., Eastern Michigan, NCAA D1 Heptathlon Champion: "I'm overwhelmed, grateful, blessed, excited and ecstatic. I'm trying to think of all the big words."

Entering the long jump: "I knew I'm not too good at the javelin or the 800, so I just wanted to get as far ahead as possible. I guess I did that.

I wasn't as confident as I should be. I hadn't done the hep since March so I was shaky. I prayed so, so much and that took care of it."

On the 800: "I was just trying to stay close to Jessica [Stockard], because I knew she was below me. I knew that Ashley [Selig] was gonna be gone. I just wanted to run my race like my coach said, and stay up there."

__/ THIS WEEKEND FEATURES POPULAR & UNIQUE MICHIGAN RACES

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: MILFORD LABOR DAY 30K & 10K PREVIEW

The Milford Labor Day 30K is becoming known for the beautiful course and the 30K distance timed to be a worthy long training run for fall marathons.

The event has a new 10K this year. Michigan Runner TV features race director Doug Klingensmith's preview of the 2005 events. http://michiganrunner.tv/2005previews/milford/

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: GREAT RACE SPORTS FESTIVAL XXV, ELKHART, INDIANA

Highlights are interviews with Nate and Aaron Usher, winners of the half marathon, Paul Aufdemberge, second overall and masters winner in the 10K, and Janelle Cole, the eight-year old Rockford In-line skater who won the amateur in-line skate criterium. We also feature the beautiful scenery of the USCF Road Race (bicycle) and Amish Country "Great Horse Race."

__/ NIKE OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, JUNE 17-18

The National Outdoor Championships have a new sponsor (Nike) and a new home in Greensboro, North Carolina. Among the Michigan entries are the ClarkstonGirls/Runnin' Gear, who are seeded #1 in both the DMR and 4xmile relays. They have a shot at the 4xmile National Record of 20:11.56 set by Bronxville, NY in 2002. Dexter's Lex Williams is taking on John Black, Bloomfield Hills in the 2 mile. Williams is also challenging Waterford's Justin Switzer and Vicksburg's Daniel Roberts in the 1 Mile. The girls 2 Mile is loaded with Michigan talent: Jessica Armstrong, Dorr; Janee Jones, Goodrich; Laura Malnor, Grand Rapids; Jenny Morgan, Clarkston.

__/ MCKEATCHIE & WEHRMAN ARE MICHIGAN STATE CHAMPION TRIATHLETES

One June 12, age group icon, Karen Mckeatchie, 52, of Ann Arbor, earned the right to represent Michigan at the "Best of the US Champs." Finishing 2nd behind Canadian star Blaire Kniaziew at the Ann Arbor/ Best of the US Qualifier, the former US Triathlete of the Year (1999) and US Master of theYear (2000), out-performed many of her state's most accomplished open-class women. Karen, if she accepts her championship invitation, will likely be the "Best of the US's" oldest and most decorated participant. She is a 19-time TT/IT All American and is a 5-time World Champion.

Michigan's male representative is 26-year-old Matt Wehrman of Birmingham. Wehrman managed to stay in front of the formidable likes of Joe Deighan, Parker Roth and Eric Fernando, all of whom make frequent visits to the Winners Circle. Ann Arbor Triathlon results can be found at http://www.eliteendeavors.com.

__/ LAKESHORE MARATHON ULTRAMARATHON- CHICAGO

The running community is abuzz with the news of the Lakeshore Marathon in Chicago, which somehow managed to be 27.2 miles. I figure all the 529 folks who finished now can claim an ultra-marathon, in addition to a PR. The usual definition of an ultra is any distance longer than a 26.2 marathon .

__/ CLAWSON FREEDOM RUN AND CLAWSON FIRECRACKER MILE SET DATES This year's Clawson Freedom Run will be held on (6-26-05) foilowed up the next week by the Clawson Firecracker Mile (7-4-05) For further info go to http://www.firecracker-mile.com and http://www.freedom- run.com

__/ NCAA DIVISION I TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, JUNE 8- 11, SACRAMENTO

We had fun following Eastern Michigan's Lela Nelson, through the Heptathlon. Amazing to think anyone could do all those events-- nevermind, be good at them. Lela set 5 personal bests during the competition in which she won the 100 meter hurdles and the long jump and finished second in the 100 meter dash. She also finished third in the long jump. Lela attended Detroit Mumford as did Ken Ferguson, holder of the 400h American junior record. We had a chance to meet Lela at a practice during the indoor season; she was excited, and a little surprised, about her success at trying different events.

Congratulations to Lela, Coach Bob Maybouer and Assistant Coach Steve Lewis.
