__/ GET THE CHAMPAIGN ON ICE: NINA BOVIO'S 50TH STATE MARATHON

Joanie Rogucki sent us this news: "I am writing to mention that Bill (Hill) and I plan to be in Cairo, WV this coming Saturday for the "Ridgerunner". This will be Nina Bovio's 50th state marathon. Nina should have quite an entourage from across the country coming to celebrate this milestone with her."

Nina is certainly seeing the country. Among the marathons she has run are Clarence DeMar in Keen, New Hampshire, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana, Little Rock Marathon in Arkansas and Portland Marathon in Oregon.

More often than not, she's placed in her age group, too.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD

--MACKINAC ISLAND - One of our favorite places to run is Mackinac Island-- we ran the Mackinac Island 8 Mile course, around the Island on our first day there; the second day we ran up on the bluffs and on the interior trails which are part of the Great Turtle Half Marathon in October. Good news: my favorite, although short, Pontiac Trail, had been closed off on recent trips to the Island. The trail fence has been reconstructed and now includes stairs almost all the way to the shore road. Trail head is at the end of the Grand Hotel/West Bluff drive.

--TRAVERSE CITY - We stopped by to help Park Place Hotel celebrate it's diamond jubilee. Rooms have been restored and the food at Minerva's is better than ever. We missed the Bayshore Marathon and 10K, but found a post- race gathering at the downtown Running Fit store. Folks were checking out photos, taking advantage of sales, and telling stories from the morning's races.

--ELKHART, IN - The Great Race Sports Festival was celebrating, too-- 25 years of running, biking, canoeing, swimming, skating, basketball, beach volleyball and ballroom dancing events.

Ron Schmanske and his volunteers keep adding events as they are requested by folks in the Michiana area. This year a new 10K in-line skate criterium was added to the mix and the USCF bicycle race had a new, hilly, course in the beautiful fruithills of Bristol, Indiana.

__/ RUNNING FIT TO POST RACE PHOTOS AFTER DEXTER ANN ARBOR

Running Fit'S Ann Arbor store, 123 East Liberty, will post 100's of random shots from the Dexter Ann Arbor Runs on Sunday afternoon (June 5).

Whileyou are checking for your free shot, check out the sale on Saturday and Sunday-- 10-50% off store-wide.

__/ ARCTIC MARATHON-AND CRUISE Jay Glassman, RD of the Toronto Marathon, passed on this gem. The first ever Arctic Marathon will take place on August 28 this year. Runners will depart from Montreal where you will board your flight to the Arctic village of Kuujjuaq. From there runners will board the Ushuala, which will take them to Kangiqsujuaq. The course is part road, part trail and part tundra, but there are no glaciers to traverse and no ice floats to leap over. For further information, contact Julia at 1-866- 263-3220 or click on http://cruisenorthexpeditions.com

__/ PRE-FONTAINE BUZZ IS ALL ABOUT RITZ VS WEBB

This year is the 30th anniversary of the death of Steve Prefontaine. It's fitting that the Nike Prefontaine Classic track meet this weekend is attracting many of track and field's superstars. Most of the buzz is about the 2 mile match-up between miler, Alan Webb, and 10,000 meter distance runner, Dathan Ritzenhein. The two haven't raced each other since Footlocker 2001, when Ritz claimed his second Footlocker title. The two have a couple of other stars to worry about though: world 5,000m champion Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya is in the 2 mile field, as is Michigan resident/Kenyan national Boaz Cheboiywo.

Cheboiywo is on a roll this season, finishing 2nd in the Payton Jordan 1500 meter race on Monday, and 2nd in the adidas Track Classic-- 5 seconds ahead of Ritz.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: GRAND RAPIDS MARATHON PREVIEW

Grand Rapids Marathon founder Don Kern previews the second running of the Grand Rapids Marathon, set for October 31. Don describes the new course which will begin in downtown Grand Rapids. A half- marathon is available, too.

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES

-- Nathan Usher won the Bayshore Marathon in 2:23:04 on Saturday in TraverseCity, then took first place again at the Great Race Half Marathon (1:09:43.2) in Elkhart, Indiana on Monday. Nate actually tied with his brother Aaron, but the clock gave Nate the win by .3 seconds.

-- Paul Aufdemberge took second overall at the Great Race 10K on Monday, finishing in 31:07. Eric Chirchir was first in 30:47; Teddy Mitchell was third.

-- Ovi Olteanu ran a sub-4 mile (3:59.2) to win the Ogden Mile in Wheeling, West Virginia Friday night. The Romanian Olympian and Romania's only sub-4 miler, Ovi finished third at the Great Race 5K on Monday.

-- Denisa Costescu (Ovi's wife) took on the Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic on Saturday and finished in third place (1:15:43). 20K is a long distance for Denisa; she ususally wins the 5K's and 10K's she typically races. Denisa placed third at the Great Race 10K.

-- Betsy Frens tried the Great Race 10K for the first time this year, placing a fast second (34:40) behind Indiana native, Amy Yoder-Begley.
