__/ KENYAN RUNNERS TO RACE INAUGURAL GRAND ISLAND TRAIL MARATHON

Munising, Mich - The fastest marathon in Michigan may be on the trails of Grand Island, located just off the Lake Superior coast in Munising.

The event's director, Jeff Crumbaugh, announced that four runners from Kitale, Kenya will be making the trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula to race the island's perimeter on July 30. The group includes four runners, including one woman, Irene Chuma, who has run a 2:28 marathon at altitude. The trio of men from the high country of eastern Kenya include Julius Tarus (2:10), Edward Kitur (2:14), and Silas Soy (2:14).

The runners train at a high altitude camp in the foothills of 14,178 ft Mt. Elgon, north of Eldoret. "I am pleased that Lee Chirchir (the group's coach) will be bringing these extraordinary runners to the Upper Peninsula. I think they will enjoy the course and the hospitality of the folks in Munising," commented Crumbaugh.

The Grand Island Trail Marathon course travels the scenic perimeter trail of Grand Island and includes an inland loop to beautiful Echo Lake. The course features 300 ft sandstone cliffs, old growth forests, and white sand beaches. Runners can find more information on the event at www.algercounty.org.
