__/ RUNNING NETWORK TV: FALL MARATHON PREVIEWS
The Running Network takes a look at this fall's upcoming C
olumbus, Detroit, Toronto Waterfront and Akron marathons.
Special this year is the 25th running of the Columbus Marat
hon.
__/ A RACING WEEKEND NOT TO MISS:
- MUSKEGON CHRONICLE SEAWAY RUN, SATURDAY, JU
NE 26
Michigan Runner Editor Scott Sullivan picked this as one of
Michigan's 25 most interesting races: "Held at the start of
the Port City's Summer Celebration. The popular 5K sticks n
ear the shore of Muskegon Lake; the 15K odyssey hugs the
same coast out to Lake Michigan, passes Bustor Keaton's o
ld Actor's Colony,
traverses a boardwalk near the big lake and loops back."
http://chroniclevents.com
- STANDARD FEDERAL BANK REED'S LAKE RUN, EAST
GRAND RAPIDS, SATURDAY, JUNE 26
Standard Federal Bank has increased the prize purse to $1
0,000 for the annual 10K & 5K around scenic Reed's Lake.
The 10K is the Michigan Runner Race Series 10K and the b
uzz is that this could be the "Race of the Summer". The even
t already has committments from Paul McMullen, Matt Thull,
Ian Forsyth,
Jeremy Hurley, Brian Klooster, plus U.S.-training Kenyans
Jared
Segera and Andrew Masai for the men's race. Betsy Frens,
Monica Joyce, Rachel Graybill and Seana Larson are amon
g the women's field so far.

- FIFTH THIRD BANK SOLSTICE RUN, NORTHVILLE, SAT
URDAY, JUNE 26
Alan Whitehead created a classic in this 5K's debut last ye
ar. In this second running, a Mustang Mile has been added t
o the competition. Both the Mile and the 5K will share a prize
purse of over $6,000. The race course is scenic Northville n
eighborhoods.

- PICTURED ROCKS RUN FOR SHELTER, MUNISING, SU
NDAY, JUNE 27
The 29th running of this 11 mile or 5 mile classic will featur
e the same hills, sand trail and Lake Superior scenery. You
can catch the "Concert in the Park" the evening before, too.
Michigan runners will want to notch this one on your belt.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD
- Hillsdale (6/10/04), Hansons Midwest Distance Solution.
Jeremy Hurley took on the role of rabbit for the first time.
He paced the first 800 of the 1500 meter run for Paul McMul
len, Dan Wilson of the Wisconson Runners, Clay Schwabe,
Tim Broe and Olympian Jason Pyrah. Ted Nykiel and Bill Pa
rrott of North Kent Running Club were discussing their picks
to win, place and show each event. Hillsdale College's cool
scoreboard announced the "A" and "B" standard Olympic qu
alifying times for each event so I didn't need my crib sheet.
Mark Menefee, Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, qualified f
or the USA Olympic Team Trials with his winning time of 13:
38.68 in the 5000m Run.
- Cutlerville (6/12/04)- Brian Diemer and Race Director Ro
b Hyde have a potent combination with the Brian Diemer Am
erikam 5K: a flat, fast, scenic, and laid-back race wth world-
class competition. The race course is lined with spectators
settling in for the Cutlerville Days parade to follow. The turn-
around marker is world class, too-- colorful flowering plants
arranged by Brian Diemer's company, Everett's Landscapin
g.
- Leland (6/12/04) - We were sampling the wine at the Leel
anaw Peninsula Wine and Food Festival and so was Ray A
ntel, coach of
Wyoming/Kellogsville's girls track and cross-country teams.
Ray passed on the exciting news that Nicole Bush had won
the Midwest Meet of Champions 3200 race earlier that day.
- Long Beach, California (6/20/04) - While visiting family in
LA and San Diego,
we had a blast looking over the course of the Long Beach
International City Bank Marathon, scheduled for October 10,
2004. Beaches, marinas, parks, light-houses, bridges, histo
ric architecture, the Queen Mary and cool off
shore breezes added up to a new destination on my marath
on list. There is a half-marathon, too.
__/ MICHIGAN STATE'S JIM STINTZI LEAVES FOR WISCON
SIN
Coach Joe Shay alerted us to this news:
"Jim Stintzi Named Women's Track And Field And Cross Co
untry Coach At Wisconsin. After 20 years at Michigan State,
Stintzi returns to his alma mater.
Stintzi becomes just the second coach in the history of the
Wisconsin programs, succeeding Peter Tegen, who led the
programs for the past 30 years. Stintzi was a seven-time All-
American and six-time Big Ten champion at Wisconsin, whe
re he received his bachelor's degree in 1981.
During his tenure at Michigan State, Stintzi led the Spartan
men to six appearances in the NCAA cross country champio
nships, including a seventh-place finish in 1997. MSU won t
he 1999 NCAA Great Lakes Regional and finished second i
n the Big Ten championships.
The Spartan women have qualified for three NCAA meets i
n the four years under Stintzi. Michigan State also won the 2
001 Big Ten Cross Country title and finished second each of
the last two years.
Stintzi is a two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year in men's cro
ss country and earned the honor for women in 2001. He has
coached 24 All-Americans and 42 All-Big Ten performers in
track and cross country for the Spartans."
