__/ SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON
TO INCLUDE MORE HISTORIC
DOWNTOWN - TORONTO. 27th June 2006. Organizers are
delighted to report
that approval has been received for some minor, yet highly
significant
course adjustments for this year's Scotiabank Toronto
Waterfront
Marathon, to be run on the flat, fast, lakeshore course on
Sunday, September
24th. Now, there will be more of the scenic, Historic
Downtown,
St.Lawrence Market neighbourhood for the first few
kilometers, and only half the
previous distance on the Leslie St. Spit [Tommy Thompson
Park] in the
second-half of the marathon.
New for 2006, the marathon [42km] and half marathon
[21km] will start
together at 7am, at the usual location, Metro Hall, at
Wellington &
Simcoe Streets. "This year, marathoners and
half-marathoners from 30+
countries, every Canadian province and more than 40
American states will
line up together. It will be a tremendous atmosphere," says
Race Director,
Alan Brookes. This is a strategy that has been
highly-successful in
other major events like the Houston and Miami Marathons."
From Simcoe Street, the runners will now go due east on
Wellington and
Front, past the historic Flatiron Building and the St.Lawrence
Market
all the way to Parliament, south on Parliament, then right
onto
Lakeshore Boulevard and all the way west to the
turn-around at Windermere. This
will add 3 more, totally-flat kilometres to the previous
marathon
course; 3km that will be subtracted from the Leslie St. Spit
section of the
old route.
"This is of huge significance," said Brookes. Scotiabank
Toronto
Waterfront Marathon has more than doubled in size over the
past 2 years,
largely because of its super-flat course that has been
popular amongst all
levels of runners, from seasoned veterans looking for a PR
or a
Boston-qualifying time, to first-timers searching for the line
of least
resistance to the Finish. The 2:11:57 winning time last year
made it the 6th
fastest marathon in North America. "The Spit was the only
controversial
part of our course," said Brookes. "Just like Haines Point at
Marine
Corps, it is scenic parkland right along the water--some
people loved the
scenery, others found it a bit lonely. Now, marathoners will
only go
out 2.5 kilometres onto the Spit, rather than the 4km they've
run
previously. We think this will be a perfect solution," says
Brookes. "It
retains some of the scenery, but not too much!"

__/ VICTAH SAILER ON TV COVERAGE OF TRACK AND
FIELD -- I ignored the TV
coverage of the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field National
last weekend.
Why? I'd been so disappointed in the coverage of several
recent events
that it wasn't worth the time. That was a good decision, as
photographer
Victah Sailer's has this to say about last weekend's track on
TV (We
have Victah's permission to reprint):
"Ok....I can't hold back anymore....on my tape, which I taped,
day
1(sat) and day 2(sun) on ESPN2
How can they possibly be hired for any other event. On day
1, they had
the womans 5000, come on to my tape at 11.37 into the
W5000 till the
finish with the result, with not one second of audio....I can
hear Scott
Davis and Scott Davis only!!!!!!
They go to Day 2 on ESPN, the same [expletive deleted]
TAPE comes on at
10.06 for the womans 5000, and again....no audio.
How can USATF pay a company to do such [expletive
meaning "terrible"
deleted] WORK?
There is no excuse, this happened on the 2006 Millrose
Games also.
Time for a new production company.....Period.
I watched the tape, and was horrified when they showed lap
after lap of
empty back stretch stands at the 2006 Adidas Track
Classic, talked
about the cool temperatures, but never ever gave us a
temperature. The same
continued at the Prefontaine Classic. This was finally
adhered to at
the NY/Reebok Games; ESPN2 is shown worldwide-- what
is cool in nyc is
different in Jakarta, etc.
It's time to try another production company...anyone?
I will apologize to anyone who is offended by my sincere and
passionate
love for the sport"
-- Victah
-------------
Now, Victah's email generated quite a lot of heated
comments. Here is
Victah's later response to some of those comments. Note
his reference
to Michigan Runner:
"Hi..I am trying to be positive, but it is very tough and I can't
refer
to God as most winners do, otherwise I'd be dangerous
knowing
everything.
I can only rely on my VCR, as 99% of the races will never be
shown
anywhere ever again; it would be nice to have avi's shown
on our national
website? Does ESPN2 have a website to watch it or the
production
company? Is that asking too much.....dyestat does it, the
Running Network
does it, the NYRR does it......the Michigan Runner does it,
yes the
Michigan Runner........
Does anyone else watch the 'Video Tape" to see what is
shown and said,
Am I asking for too much? We were all there in some
capacity, but would
nice to see the tape for verification. Almost every road race
has a
video of their event and splits, did you see one split on any
results
sheet? Splits? 400m, Mile, One Kilometer?
I wasn't sitting in an air conditioned place to photograph the
meet,
obviously
Roll the video tape, oh yeah, we can't ........it's a National
Security
Issue"
