__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"The statistics on obesity are just unbelievable. I think we need to turn
our runners into prophets or salespeople and get more people out,
because we all started at some point, thought we couldn't run a mile or
two miles, and when you do it you know how great it feels. ... Sometimes
you can lead from the middle of the pack so I plan to keep doing that."
-- Dan Mulhern, Michigan's First Gentleman, after finishing the Mackinac
Memorial Bridge Run, May 29, 2004.
__/ RUNNING NETWORK TV: AN INTERVIEW WITH RYAN SHAY
Ryan Shay (Nike/Notre Dame/Central Lake, MI HS) won both the
marathon and half-marathon USATF titles in 2003, his first year as a
professional runner. We spoke with the nine-time NCAA All American in
March 2004, shortly after Ryan competed in the U.S. Olympic Men's
Marathon Trials. http://michiganrunner.tv/2004ryanshay/
__/ RUNNING NETWORK TV: GREAT RACE XXIV, ELKHART, INDIANA
The Great Race Sports Festival in Elkhart, Indiana has grown to 33
events in its 24 years. Running Network cameras bring you the
Memorial Day weekend action on the track, the river walk, the roads,
and the river. We begin this week with the Jim Ryun Mile. Later on we'll
check out the new half-marathon courses in Amish Country between
Goshen and Elkhart. http://michiganrunner.tv/2004greatrace/
__/ SUNBURST RACES, SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, SATURDAY, JUNE
5
The Sunburst races in South Bend have distances for everybody: the
marathon begins at an early 5:45 am; the 5K run begins at 7:00 am, the
half-marathon at 7:15 am, the 10K run at 7:30 am and the fun walk at
8:45. Online registration is closed now, but you can register Friday and
pick up your packet from Noon-8 at the College Football Hall of Fame.

__/ HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES: SIGN UP NOW FOR
- MIDWEST MEET OF CHAMPIONSHIPS
- ADIDAS OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
David Mitchell sent us this reminder:
"There are a couple of opportunities for Michigan high school athletes
and fans that I hope you can share with your list members. MI
graduating senior athletes can fill out an online form to show their
interest in being selected to represent their state at the Midwest Meet
of Champions. Final selections will be made by a statewide committee
of coaches on Sunday June 6, so they need to declare their interest
ASAP.
http://www.midwestmeet-teammichigan.com/
The other chance is the chance to shine (or go see MI athletes go up
against the best) on a national stage the following weekend. Sunday,
June 6 is also the deadline for normal entry. Athletes may enter as late
as June 13, but will be charged a late fee. Athletes can register online
for the adidas Outdoor Championships at:
http://www.nationalscholastic.org/ "
__/ MHSAA TRACK AND FIELD FINALS, SATURDAY, JUNE 5
Michigan High School athletes will be competing at the MHSAA Track
and Field Finals, Saturday, June 5. Upper Peninsula events for all
divisions will be at Kingsford HS beginning at 9 am Central Time. Lower
Peninsula events begin at 9 am at the following locations in the Grand
Rapids area:
Division I - Rockford HS
Division II - Caledonia HS
Division III - Comstock Park HS
Division IV - Houseman Field, Grand Rapids.
For lists of qualifiers and order of events, see http://mhsaa.com
__/ ENTER LOTTERY FOR LABOR DAY BRIDGE RUN
We were among nearly 600 runners who had a terrific time running the

feature this event later on this month.) Governor Granholm and the
Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports, is planning
another run on Labor Day. According to the Web site: "Labor Day 2004
will provide an opportunity for runners to be part of a select group that
will cross the Mackinac Bridge, leading the way for thousands of
Michigan walkers who annually enjoy this Michigan tradition. To qualify,
individuals must have participated in a Governor's Council endorsed
event."
