__/ RUNNING NETWORK TV: AN INTERVIEW WITH BOAZ
CHEBOIYWO
We interviewed Boaz Cheboiywo, Eastern Michigan track and cross
country champion, during the Mid American Conference outdoor track
and field championships at Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant,
Michigan. Boaz talks about his title races, running a sub 4:00 mile, his
training, and his plans after college. He'll be defending his 10,000 meter
title next week at the NCAA Division Outdoor Championships in
Sacramento, California. http://michiganrunner.net/features/
cheboiywo.html
__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I didn't have sufficient time to train for the 5,000."
-- Boaz Cheboiywo when asked how he chose to compete at the 10,000
meter distance at NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships, 2002.
__/ BLUE WATER HOSPICE RUNS, MARYSVILLE, JUNE 7
The 10K and 5K, in their 18th year, can be magic if weather cooperates.
The St. Clair River sparkles blue, the race is flat and fast on the beautiful
riverside out and back course, and the town is a fun place to hang out
afterward. Call (810) 982-8809.
__/ CHRIS LEAR'S "SUB 4:00" IS OUT
Chris Lear was busy signing books at Running Fit in Ann Arbor last
Sunday afternoon after the Dexter Ann Arbor Run. "Sub 4:00; Alan
Webb and the Quest for the Fastest Mile" is Lear's new book. Kevin
Sullivan (Sully) and Tim Broe were on hand to meet fans, too. We're
finding "Sub 4:00" hard to put down. Michigan Runner TV will feature
our interview with Chris later this summer.
__/ MACKINAC ISLAND LILAC RUN, JUNE 7
The 54th annual Lilac Festival on Mackinac Island celebrates the oldest
lilacs in North America. If you can get to the Island by 4:00 pm Friday,
you can catch Rick Stanton's live jazz on the lawn at Marquette Park
along with the scent of hundres of lilacs. The Lilac Queen will be
crowned at 5:30 and the marina lights up after dark with hundreds of
purple lights. Saturday's 10K Run and Walk begins at 9:30 am. http://
www.gaultracemanagement.com
__/ GINNY OJALA'S ROCK AND ROLL SUCCESS
While Ondoro Osoro and Irina Bogacheva were having a good day with
their wins at last Sunday's Rock and Roll Marathon in San Diego, Ann
Arbor's Ginny Ojala was having her own success. Carl Ojala, Eastern
Michigan's favorite weather professor, sent us this note:
"Just got home from San Diego and got your latest running news.
Thought you might like this little story. Hope so. We went to SD for one
thing to visit my daughter..... AND so that my wife, Ginny, could walk in
the Rock and Roll Marathon out there this past Sunday. My daughter ran
in it last year (her first marathon) and finished in about 4:40 or so. Well,
since then, Ginny has been walking some, and she gradually worked
her way up to 18 to 20 miles or so. She decided that since she turned 60
in April that she was gonna try the Rock and Roll. She really did little in
the way of athletics in the past. This was her first attempt at anything like
a marathon - and she was DETERMINED to finish. Well, she did it!! It
was wonderful...... we are all proud of her.
Carl"
__/ HARVEST STOMPEDE TO BE TELEVISED
The Harvest Stompede on September 13 will be televised this year on
Michigan Runner TV. Rick Coates, representative of the Leelanau
Peninsula Vintners Association, indicated that the run has become
amazingly popular in its two year existence. He credits the unique event
venue, superb organization, positive press and word of mouth for the
race's popularity. This year, the event will close registration at 800.
Races begin at 9:30,am, September 13 at Ciccone Vinyards. To register
for the 5K or 15K run or walk, visit http://www.lpwines.com/harvest-
stompede.shtml
__/ RRCA ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF INTERIM EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) has appointed Ed
Demoney of Arlington, Virginia, as its interim Executive Director (ED),
replacing David Dobrzynski. Mr. Demoney is currently serving in a
volunteer capacity as Executive Director of Food for Others, Inc., Fairfax,
VA, a nonprofit providing emergency food services throughout Northern
Virginia. Prior to managing Food for Others, Mr. Demoney enjoyed a 32-
year career with the Federal Reserve System, followed by 6 years in the
banking industry. Prior to his civilian career, Ed was a Marine. He retired
with the rank of Colonel.
Lest it otherwise be thought, Ed is no stranger to the running world. He
began running in his forties after being inspired by Frank Shorter and
Don Kardong in the 1972 Olympics. His first marathon was the initial
Marine Corps Marathon in 1976. He ran his first 100-mile trail run in
1979 and plans to finish the 2003 Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Run in
July. He is a member of several running clubs in the Washington DC
area and was the Race Director for the 2003 Massanutten Mountain
Trails 100 Mile Run, Front Royal, Virginia. Ed Demoney may be reached
via telephone at (703) 836-0558, fax (703) 836-4430, or email
execdir@rrca.org.
For further information, contact RRCA President, Freddi Carlip, at (570)
524-9713 or email president@rrca.
