-- VOLKSLAUFE, FRANKENMUTH, MONDAY, JULY 4

Frankenmuth Jaycees kick off the 30th anniversary of the Volkslaufe ("The People's Race) with fireworks on Sunday evening. Monday's events include a 20K run, a 10K run, a 5K run, a 5K walk, and the 2K Gemutlichkeit Run. This year, in addition to the traditional beer stein awards, all finishers in timed races will receive 30th anniversary medals. Post-race party features the Frankentrost Band's European "Blasmusik" and, of course, Frankenmuth's famous chicken dinners served outside near the finish line in Heritage Park. There's no better time to hang out with friends we've met running races. 20K is part of the Michigan Runner Race Series. Register online through Saturday, 9:00 pm at http://volkslaufe.org.

-- WHITMORE LAKE SPLASH 'N' DASH, WHITMORE LAKE, MONDAY, JULY 4

You can choose a 10K run, a 5K run, a 5K walk or you can choose to cool off with the Splash "N" Dash: a 1/4 mile run, 1/4 mile swim, 1/4 run. The "Tin Man" combines the 10K run with the Splash "N" Dash. The Whitmore Lake Kiwanis and Whitmore Lake High School host these events which take place at Whitmore Lake High School. 10K begins at 8:00 am; 5K's follow at 8:15 am, and the Splash 'N' Dash begins as 9:15 am. For more information contact Tom KeKeyser at tom.dekeyser@wips.net.

-- FIRECRACKER MILE, CLAWSON, MONDAY, JULY 4

Fast people looking for prize money and anyone looking for a mile PR should head to Clawson for the Firecracker Mile. Mile is straight with no turns and, typically, a tailwind. Registration is open before the race at 7:45 am, but be sure to arrive early as 14 mile closes at 8:30 am. The race begins at 9:00 am and leads off the Clawson 4th of July parade in front of a loudl, cheering crowd.

-- FIRECRACKER 5K, BEULAH, MONDAY, JULY 4

If you are in the Crystal Lake neighborhood in Beulah, try the 16th anniversary of the Firecracker 5K which begins at 8:00 am at Crystal Lake. Contact Paul Szymanski at paul@lakeshoretitle.net.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER MAGAZINE, JULY/AUGUST 2005 IS AVAILABLE NOW

I laughed out loud at Scott Sullivan's "Salad Days" and this issue features more great writing by Riley McLincha (the drubbler) on the Crim Festival of Races, Fred Vanhala on Paul Aufdemberge's Master's record, and Sara Deuling's remembrance of Riley Klingel. Former editor Dave Foley pronounced Greg Janicki's piece on running his first Boston Marathon as "superb." Michigan Runner is available at local running stores or by subscription. For the complete list of stores see http:// www.michiganrunner.net/features/stores0304.html.

http://michiganrunner.tv __/ MRN ON THE ROAD

-- SILVER LAKE SAND DUNES - Silver Lake Sand Dunes, near Hart and Mears between Muskegon and Ludington needs a triathlon to highlight it's incredible terrain. Run the trails of Silver Lake State Park, bicycle the roads to Little Point Sable lighthouse, swim in Silver Lake and Lake Michigan, save time to hike up the high, steep dunes between Silver Lake and Lake Michigan.

Lodging at Sierra Sands was friendly and includes a pool in which one can swim laps.

-- LUDINGTON - The Ludington Lakestride Half Marathon happened to be on a cool, overcast day-- perfect for appreciating the trails in Ludington State Park, the dunes, and the Lake Michigan shore. We especially enjoyed the volunteer in the park who told us where we could see some deer. Other volunteers handed out red licorice in the second half of the race. Congratulations to Gary Anderson and his many long- serving volunteers for 25 years of a great Michigan tradition.

-- MUNISING - Pictured Rocks Run for Shelter celebrated its' 30th anniversary.

Pictured Rocks Run is the Boston Marathon of UP racing. We have to thank Lynn Chamberlain, Deb Molitor, Michelle Hack, and other board members of Harbor House and the Spouse Abuse Shelter Project, Inc. for carrying on the traditions of the Pictured Rocks event when founder Norma Harger stepped down.

Norma is no longer running, but she plays tennis and roller blades. USA Today recogized Munising as one of 10 great places to discover Midwest charm. Michigan Runner editor, Scott Sullivan, and I discovered the charm of running beautiful trails in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park. We also spent a couple of glorious hours touring shipwrecks on Munising Bay. Look for our Michigan Runner TV show about the Pictured Rocks race and the Munising area.

-- ANN ARBOR - Just spent an evening celebrating Tim Broe's third national 5000 meter title with a little sangria at Dominick's in Ann Arbor. Brand-new Reebok pro Nate Brannen and NCAA All-American, Andrew Ellerton, also joined in the celebration. Brannen will continue to train with Coach Ron Warhurst while he finishes up his Sports Management degree from the University of Michigan and focuses on the 1500. Ellerton will continue to run the 800 for Michigan while he continues his studies.

The evening reminded us of the time in the 80's when Michiganian's Greg Meyer and Herb Lindsay were beating the heck out over everybody all over the continent. Many of their battles were with Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter.

__/ MILERS WANTED IN TENNESSEE

David Monti of Race Results Weekly sent along this invitation: The Fun Fest Crazy Mile, a standard English mile run on a 400m track, seeks athletes.

__/ BOB PARKS & THE MAC TRACK AND FIELD CAMPAIGN

Former Eastern Michigan men's track & field coach, Bob Parks has taken up the cause of men's track & field in the Mid-American conference.

Recently, Bob sent us this good news:

"I had a meeting his morning with Bob England, interim AD at EMU, and he informed me that the Board of Regents has endorsed a broad based intercollegiate athletic program, which means that nothing is going to be dropped there, in comparison to the incomprehensible actions of 6 other clueless MAC schools who dropped mens' track (and 3 of them XC as well)."

_/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - ROADS

-- Kyle Baker is back, winning the Standard Federal Reed's Lake 10K in 30:24 over an extremely competitive field. Baker also took 3rd in the 5K.
