__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: OLYMPIC CHAMPION BILLY
MILLS VISITS SAULT STE. MARIE
Billy Mills is the only American to win the Olympic 10,000
meter race. Since his come-from-behind victory in 1964,
Billy Mills has promoted running and fitness for Native
American youth. Michigan Runner TV talks with Billy Mills,
Sault tribal chairman Bernard Bouscher and members of
the Chi Nogin Running Club at the Billy Mills Fun Run, July
6. http://michiganrunner.tv.
You can see video of the dramatic last lap of that 1964 race,

__/ DUKES ARE 1-2 AT USATF YOUTH ATHLETICS
CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Motor City Track Club's Menachan and Shaka Dukes
took championship and runner-up honors in the 3000 meter
race at the USATF Youth Athletics Championships. They
competed in the Midget Division at the Miami-Dade Tropical
Park Stadium last weekend (1990-91). Menacham's
winning time of 10:19:50 all but tied his brother Shaka's
time of 10:19:63. Menacham also took second place in the
1500 meter race with a time of 4:50:26. This meet serves as
one of the selection meets for the 2003 World Youth
Athletics Championships, July 10-13, 2003, in Sherbrooke,
Quebec, Canada.
__/ KEWEENAW TRAIL FESTIVAL, HANCOCK &
EAGLE
HARBOR, JULY 13-14
Beware of a race director whose email address begins with
runskikayak. When he tells you something is flat, take it with
a handful of salt, not a grain. This two-day, three-race
festival is a blast, but not for the faint of heart. Saturday
morning's 10K in McLain State Park on Lake Superior, just
west of Hancock, is the part that's "flat and fast"; it includes
tough hills and two stretches on loose, slogging beach
sand. Saturday night there's a 5.8K hill climb, up more than
800 vertical feet from the beach at scenic Eagle Harbor to
the top of Mt. Lookout, the tallest peak in the Keweenaw
Peninsula. Look out for bear poop on the trail, not to
mention bears. Once the race is over, you have to come
down. Sunday, comes the 25K trek, or maybe it's 30K, no
one really knows, through Swedetown Creek Gorge and
over Maasto Hiihto Ski Trails. Meadows, creeks, waterfalls,
forests, panoramic views and thigh-killing ascents. Call Jeff
Crumbaugh at (906) 277-2854 or email
runskikayak@hotmail.com.-- Tom Henderson.
__/ IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: RILEY MCLINCHA
DRUBBLES HIS WAY TO TRIVIAL PURSUIT
If you've run the Crim, the Mackinaw Island 8 Mile, the Detroit
Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon or any one of several
Riverbend Strider races around Flint, you've seen Riley
McLincha drubble his three basketballs from the start to the
finish line. In fact, I measure my Crim time by whether or not
I can beat Riley to the finish line. Well, now McLincha has
gone national with his drubbling. To celebrate the 20th
anniversary edition of the Trivial Pursuit Game the company
held a contest for new questions and McLincha's question
won over the 800 other entries. His winning question is
"What does juggler Riley McLincha do with three
basketballs while running marathons in a sport he calls
drubbling?" We also caught McLincha's Today Show
appearance last Tuesday. McLincha also has other talents;
he wrote and sings the Crim song and his singing of the
National Anthem is a feature before the Mackinaw Island 8
Mile race.
__/ RYAN SHAY NAMED TO VERIZON ACADEMIC
ALL-AMERICAN TEAM
University of Notre Dame cross country and track and field
standout Ryan Shay (Central Lake, Mich.) was named to the
2001-02 Verizon Academic All-America Second Team in
June. One of the most decorated Irish distance runners in
school history, Shay led the Irish to the 2001 BIG EAST
Cross Country Championship, a sixth-place team finish at
the NCAA Cross Country Championship meet and posted
high finishes in both the indoor and outdoor track and field
national championship meets as well.
Shay concluded his stellar collegiate career at the 2002
NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Baton
Rouge, La., in early June. Looking to defend his 2001
10,000-meter individual title, Shay finished second to 2001
individual cross country champion Boaz Chebiywo from
Eastern Michigan. It was the 10th All-America honor for Shay
in his five years of competition at Notre Dame (he qualified
for the 2001-02 season after missing both a cross country
and track and field season earlier in his career due to
injuries).
Excelling in the classroom as well as the track and cross
country courses, Shay graduated in May of 2002 with an
economics and computer applications degree (3.21 GPA).

__/ HELP LORI STICH ZIMMERMAN "RUN FOR A
REASON"
Way back in February of 2000, Lori Stich ran 2:50:44 to be
Michigan's first finisher at the Olympic Marathon Trials in
Columbia, South Carolina. In the meantime, Lori married
Phil Zimmerman, settled near Austin, Texas and returns to
Michigan now and then for a race. In fact, Lori has already
qualified for the 2004 Olympic Marathon trials with a P.B.
time of 2:42:59 in the Austin Marathon. This time, Lori
hopes not only to improve her 2000 time and place among
the top amateurs, but also to "Run for a Reason." Lori is
running to support Mecosta County Habitat for Humanity.
Contact Lori Stich Zimmerman at 141 Liano Court, Cedar
Cfreek, Texas, 78612 to make a donation or for more
information.
__/ B.A.A. ADJUSTS QUALIFYING TIMES FOR BOSTON
MARATHON
Boston, Mass. (June 27, 2002)--For the first time in 13
years, the Boston Athletic Association has adjusted its
qualifying standards for runners in the Boston Marathon.
The new qualifyingn times affect runners who are 45 years

accommodate more participants. The adjustment in the
qualifying times follows a review and analysis of the
performances across the sport, and three new age
groupings have been created (70 to 74 years old; 75-79
years old; and 80 years and older.)
