__/ NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR 2006 MARATHON FOTO/ROAD RACE MANAGEMENT RACE DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR - Road Race Management, publisher of the newsletter for race officials and an annual comprehensive Directory for race and industry officials, seeks nominations for the Marathon Foto/Road Race Management Road Race Director of the Year Award (presented by Running Times). "This award was conceived as a way to recognize and promote excellence in race directing", according to editor and publisher Phil Stewart. Nominees are judged on several factors including overall ability, reputation of race, sponsor relations, creativity, and organizational ability. Described by Bill Rodgers as the Gold Medal of race directing, the award is determined by a vote of a diverse ten member committee.

Nominations close August 31 and the winner will be announced at the annual Road Race Management Race Directors' Meeting October 12, in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Nomination forms may be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Jeff Darman, c/o Road Race Management, Race Director of the Year, 110 East State Street, Suite 15, Kennett Square, PA 19348 or by downloading from the Road Race Management web site: http://www.rrm.com.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - TRAVERSE CITY PAT BALL - We're in Traverse City for a week while Michigan Runner publisher Art McCafferty teaches an Eastern Michigan class in Sports and Events Marketing. Among the guest speakers were Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon Race Director Pat Ball. Pat stressed the importance of relationships and explained the ideas that helped grow the event from 2,000 participants in the late 1990's to 13,000 in 2005. Pat told the students "You can do this" and had several of the students by the end of the class thinking that they would, indeed, do this." MIKE COLLINS - Another guest speaker was Mike Collins, former director of the Columbus Marathon and current director of the Colorado Colfax Marathon in Denver. An interesting feature of the Colorado Colfax Marathon is its emphasis on kids' fitness. Kids get to add up 25.2 miles and equivalents (for example, soccer counts as an equivalent) and run the last mile as part of the event. Collins and his wife Julie ran the Cherry Festival 5K, then joined daughter Kylie and us for the Cherry Royale parade and Saturday evening fireworks.

JOHN FALLON - Eastern Michigan University president, John Fallon, addressed the Sports Marketing class and several visitors from an Educational Leadership class. When it came time for questions, an Ed Leadership graduate student asked President Fallon whether he planned to cut Eastern Michigan's track/field & cross country teams (as several Mid American Conference schools have done.) Fallon reassured the audience that he had no plans to eliminate track/field and cross country, that he believes the better approach is raising funds to support the teams. To that end, Eastern Michigan announced July 7 that their new athletic development director, Craig Fink, begins immediately.

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - TRACK AND FIELD

-- Nick Willis (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Michigan/Reebok) beat his own national record in the 1500 at the Golden League meet in Paris, July 9. Willis' 3:32.17 bettered his previous record by .21 seconds.

-- NACAC U23 CHAMPIONSHIPS, SANTO DOMINTO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, JULY 5-7

- We heard this morning from Olympian Gary Morgan: "I was the distance coach on the NACAC team. The Michigan athletes and the whole USA team performed exceptionally well. They brought home 58 medals. It was a real thrill coaching them."

Here are USATF's comments about Michigan athletes: "2003 Pan Am Junior champion Ken Ferguson (Detroit, Mich.) dominated the men's 400 meter hurdles winning in a meet-record 48.80 seconds.

The men's 4x400m team of Reggie Darder (Cecilia, La.), Carey LaCour (Humble, Texas), Ken Ferguson and Lionel Larry claimed silver crossing the line in 3:05.10.

In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, rising Eastern Michigan junior Corey Nowitzke (Monroe, Mich.) claimed silver in 9 minutes 8.63 seconds.

On the field, soon-to-be Michigan State senior Brad Gebuaer (Bad Axe, Mich.) conquered the field in the men's pole vault, winning the gold with his clearance of 5.51 meters/18 feet 1 inch."
