__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I'm so rusty from not racing for so long. I was out there not sure if I was feeling good or bad. But, it's inside just waiting to come out. Considering my last race, this was a heck of a lot better and I'm as healthy as I've been in two years. After the USA's last year, I had a stress fracture in my back, then had surgery last October on a broken cessmoid bone removed from my left foot. I didn't start running until January 1 and figured it was a good day to start fresh.

"I'm at 95 percent now, and still training in Ann Arbor, Michigan, under Ron Warhurst. Missing six months helped me to make the choice not to run the steeplechase. I'm basically running on strength right now and trying to muscle it out. I'm still catching up on speed work."

-- Tim Broe, after winning his heat in the the 5000 meter semifinals, US Olympic Team Trials, Track and Field, July 12, 2004

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER JULY/AUGUST 2004-- LATE MAILING

Due to a mix-up with the printer, the July/August issue of the Michigan Runner magazine was mailed about two weeks late. Please send me e mail (jennie@glsp.com) if you are a subscriber and you haven't received your issue by now.

Among the highlights of the issue is Riley McLincha's account of drubbling the Boston Marathon. (Drubbling is Riley's term for dribbling three basketballs as he runs races.)

__/ RESEARCHER FINDS DIFFERENCES IN SPORTS DRINKS WITH PROTEIN

We had a very interesting phone conversation earlier today with Michael Saunders, as assistant professor of Exercise Physiology at James Madis on University. Saunders is a competitive runner and triathlete who was asked if he knew whether sports drinks with protein really made a difference. Saunders didn't know, but he decided to find out. He conducted a study with cyclists riding to exhaustion. The results were surprising: those who took a sports drink with protein lasted 29% longer. Then they returned 15 hours later and rode to exhaustion again, they laster 40% longer than th e riders who took a drink without protein. The protein enhanced drink really did enhance both performance and recovery. Details about the study are available at http://www.evitamins.com/news.asp?fu4i=33jde8&f4rws=3hgg56ge7& id=519985&j5gik=39ddt9d
