__/ MRN ON THE ROAD
This week's Michigan Running News comes by way of the free WiFi
hotspot at the Iowa Welcome Center, Davenport, Iowa.
__/ MICHIGAN FLAVORBEST APPLE RUN, SPARTA, SATURDAY,
JULY 16
The fifteenth edition of one West Michigan's most popular races is this
Saturday. The Michigan Flavorbest Apple Run features a flat, fast,
certified 5K beginning at 8:00 am, followed by kids' fun runs at 8:40 am.
Complimentary child care is available and race-packet goodies include
a $10 Striders gift certificate and 1/2 gallon of fresh Michigan apple
cider. Age-group winners take home awards, a real live apple tree and
champagne. While you are waiting for the award-ceremony you can
watch the 2nd annual Michigan Apple Pie Eating Contest or, for that
matter, be one of the participants. Online registration is closed, but you
can still register on location at Sparta High School Friday afternoon or
race-day morning. http://www.michiganapplerun.com.
__/ ALPENFEST RUN, GAYLORD, SATURDAY, JULY 16
The terrific Alpenfest festival is just one reason to be in Gaylord
this weekend. The Alpenfest Run features a new 12K distance, as well
as the traditional 5K and 1 Mile races. The challenging 12K course
takes you out to the rolling hills of the countryside and the chance to see
the quieter side of bustling Gaylord. Events are always competitive and
this year feature ChampionChip timing. Johnson Propane is the lead
sponsor and Otsego County Parks and Recreation are putting on the
Alpenfest Run for the 29th year. Events begin at 8:00 am, Court Street
Pavillion, downtown Gaylord. http://otsegocountyparksrec.com
__/ DON KERN FEATURED IN OLN'S COUNTDOWN 25 MOST
DANGEROUS PLACES
-- We happened to catch OLN's Countdown: 25 Most Dangerous Places
on the tube earlier this week just as the countdown reach #5, the South
Pole and the South Pole Marathon. Grand Rapids' Don Kern was one of
the people interviewed about the challenges of running at the South
Pole. Think of 2 days to acclimate to cold, picking a day with blue skies
and hope the "good" weather continued. The first day, the skies failed to
cooperate an hour into the marathon. Blizzard conditions were so
severe that runners couldn't see their feet and the snowmobile escort
couldn't find the horizon.
They turned back and tried again, successfully, another day.
The #2 most dangerous place was the Arabian peninsula's "Empty
Quarter", sand dessert and #1: "The Death Zone", mountains above
26,000 feet.
__/ RUN CLARK LAKE IS AUGUST 6
The ever-vigilant Laurel Park pointed out a wrong date for Run Clark
Lake in the "Michigan Running News Upcoming Schedule". Race date
is Saturday, August 6, 2005. Events begin at 8:30 am.
__/ CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND COULD SEND
MORE MICHIGAN ATHLETES TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Nate Brannen and Kevin Sullivan are going for the Canadian title in the
1500 meter race at this weekend's Canadian championships. Andrew
Ellerton is taking on the 800. We'll have an updated list of Michigan
Athletes competing at the World Championships in Helsinki next week.
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - ROADS
Jacob Frey of the Hansons Brooks Distance Project turned in the best
American performance (47:02) at the Utica Boilermaker 15K on Sunday,
July 10, while teammates Dot McMahan and Carly Greytock were 2nd &
3rd American women. Meanwhile, Paul Aufdemberge turned in the 2nd
best American performance overall and best Masters performance
(48:02). Paul took home a $1000 paycheck. And if Michigan athletes
weren't stealing enough of the New York show, Doug Goodhue took top
honors and the $300 prize for first in the 60+ age group.
With Grey Meyer's induction in the National Distance Running Hall of
Fame during the weekend's ceremonies, our notion that Michigan is
truly a running mecca gets some additional credibility.
Greg Feucht continues his record-setting ways. Greg's monther, Linda
Feucht, alerted us to Greg's win in the "Sunrise to Sunset" ultramarathon
in Mongolia. He set a new record in that one. Results are pending. greg
also set a new course record and won the Great Wall Marathon near
Beijing on May 21.
Greg said he ran the Great Wall Marathon as a training run for the race
in Mongolia. Watch out, in Augusst, Greg's returning from his stay in
China.
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - TRACK & FIELD
In his first race as a professional: Nate Brannen ran a PR 3:37.85,
coming in ahead of USA indoor champ Scott McGowan at the American
Milers Club High Performance meet, Indianapolis, July 7.
Soon-to-be Michigan sophomore Mike Woods earned his ticket to the
Pan-Am Junior Games by winning both the 1500 and 5000 meter events
at the Canadian Junior Championships. (Times are not available as
we're writing this issue of MRN.)
