JULY 15
-- REPORTING FROM THE SACRAMENTO
This is my first time attending the trials--considered the
world's greatest track meet other than the World
Championships and the Olympic Games. The beautiful and
fun city of Sacramento along with the thrill of watching the
best runners, jumpers and throwers of the US perform, is a
terrific combination. Michigan Runner photographer Carter
Sherline, Run Michigan's John Brabbs,and michtrack.org's
Jeff Hollobaugh and all busy following the action and getting
California tans in the 90 degree weather. The big story: the
US is producing a whole new generation of world-class
athletes. For times and complete results see http://usatf.org
-- OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST BOB SCHUL IS A FAN OF
THE TRIALS
RunOhio's Matt McGowan introduced us to one of the
legends of American long distance running, Bob Schul. Bob
won the Olympic Gold Medal in the 5000 meter race in 1964,
the year that Billy Mill's upset in the 10,000 got more
attention than Bob's achievement. A Dayton, Ohio resident,
Bob now coaches for Wright State University. Bob is one of
only five American's who have won gold in distance running
events. Bob's autobiography, "In the Long Run" is a great
read. See http://www.running.net/other/classified.html for
more information on Bob's autobiography.
.-- AL OWENS OFFICIATES AT SECOND TRIALS
Al Owens has been a track and field starter in Michigan
events for a long time, so it was no surprise to find Al
officiating at his second Olympic trials. Al works with a team
of six (he's the seventh) on the throws. In this meet we saw
Al on the infield, managing the athletes in the women's
hammer finals. Officials are all volunteers. Al, for those who
may not know, is one of the founders of the Fifth Third River
Bank Run.
-- SANTEE & BRASCOMB DRAWN PERFECT MILE FANS
Author Neal Brascomb and Wes Santee, the University of
Kansas miler who chased the sub-4 mile along with Roger
Bannister, spoke to a filled house at the Cal State
Sacramento University Library. (See Ron Marinucci's review
of Brascomb's "The Perfect Mile" at
http://www.michiganrunner.net/features/perfectmile0504.ht
ml.) It was a treat to meet Wes Santee, and the author, Neal
Bascomb, who's story of Santee, Bannister and Australian,
John Landy is a real page-turner.
-- PAUL MCMULLEN ADVANCES TO 1500 SEMIFINALS
1996 Olympian, Paul McMullen finished second in a very
fast heat to qualify for the 1500 semifinals. Paul was a little
concerned, "I wish I had been a little more peppy in the last
200 meters." There seem to be a lot of McMullen fans in the
stands.
-- BRIANA SHOOK'S BRILLIANT STEEPLECHASE IS A DQ
Toledo's Briana Shook took the early lead and never looked
back in her American Record steeplechase run. It's really
too bad that she didn't look back; Shook ran wide of the first
water jump, didn't realize it, and was disqualified. Shook
misses out on the
U.S. title, but the women's steeple still isn't run in the
Olympic games.

JULY 16
-- MICHIGAN'S LINDSEY GALLO ADVANCES TO 1500
FINALS
All-American Lindsey Gallo finished fourth in a very fast heat
to advance to Sunday's 1500 meter final. Gallo noticed that
there must have been a lot of Michigan people in the stands;
she heard a lot of people cheering her on. Gallo's
competition will be Olympians Marla Runyan, Suzy Favor
Hamilton and Amy Rudolph.
-- TIM BROE WINS 5000, MARK MENEFEE TAKES 5TH
OK, I left my reporter's objectivity behind for the men's 5000
meter final. With Hansons-Brooks Mark Menefee and
Michigan assistant coach Tim Broe in the race, I was as
anxious as a parent. Mark took the lead with about 4 laps to
go; Tim never led until the last two laps, but he maintained
contact with the leaders until he took off, running the last
800 meters in a 1.57 something. Tim will still have to get
either the Olympic "B" or "A" standard and he plans to do
that at a race in London June 30. He has until August 9 to
get a 13:25 qualifying time.
Mark finished in fifth place, beating such notables as Jorge
Torres and Luke Watson.
-- KATIE MCGREGOR TAKES 4TH IN 10,000, HAS A
CHANCE AT ATHENS
There were two races in the women's 10,000 meter final:
Deena Kastor and everybody else. Kastor lapped all but
two runners for the win. University of Michigan All American
Katie McGregor led the chase group, finishing what could
have been a disappointing fourth. Kastor, however,
announced her intention to run the marathon rather than the
10,000, leaving the third spot open for McGregor. McGregor
still needs the Olympic "A" standard to go to Athens.

-- PHIL MCMULLEN & PAUL TEREK ARE BOTH IN THE
HUNT FOR THE DECATHLON TEAM
With eight events complete in the decathlon, Paul Terek is in
third place (6871 points) and Phil McMullen is in fourth place
(6757 points). The javelin is underway and the 1500 will
conclude this tough event. We'll report tomorrow on the
results. Bryan Clay leads and Tom Pappas is second.
