-- Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Runner's Gazette publisher Freddi Carlip hosted Michigan Runner along with our Association of Running Publishers colleagues for our summer meeting. Lewisburg was a fun city to explore on a morning run. Among the sights were the Susquehanna River, Bucknell University, downtown Federal style buildings and houses reflecting a building boom from 1830 to 1840, alleys with names: Pear Tree, Cherry, White Pine, and lots of opportunities for hill workouts. We salute New England Runner's Michelle LeBrun and Marathon & Beyond's Jan Seeley for setting up a fun and useful few days.

__/ RUNNING FIT - ANN ARBOR ART FAIR SALE - Running Fit's Ann Arbor store at 4th and Liberty is busy during the Ann Arbor Art Fair. "We use the art fair to sell closeout shoes, odd sizes and everything we need to clear out from all 7 of our stores. You can find real jewels in the rubble if you look close and its a fun kind of shopping! While youre in Ann Arbor, check out the Nike/Nano kiosk." The Art Fair continues through Saturday, July 22.

__/ GOVERNOR GRANHOLM ANNOUNCES MICHIGAN RECREATION TRAILS TO EXPAND BY 2009 Governor Jennifer M. Granholm announced earlier this week that the state will work with the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund to link Michigans trail system by building new trails and upgrading existing trails throughout the state. The Governor made the announcement at the trust funds 30th anniversary celebration in Traverse Citys Hull Park. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund was established in 1976 under legislation signed by former Governor William Milliken. It set aside the oil, gas and mineral lease payments and royalties paid to the state for exploration on public lands and placed them in the trust fund. The fund provides matching grants to local units of government and state agencies for land acquisition, public outdoor recreation projects, and recreation facility development projects.

A few significant projects the grants have funded are: Maple Bay Natural Area, Grand Traverse County grant to Grand Traverse County of nearly $7 million to acquire 400 acres and more than 2,500 feet of Traverse Bay shoreline;

Millennium Park, city of Grand Rapids 3 grants to Grand Rapids, totaling over $5 million to acquire and develop an important new park on the Grand River;

Oakland County grant of more than $2.6 million for acquisition of Lyon Oaks Park;

Bay City over $1 million in grants to Bay City for acquisition of land for a regional trail system and development along the Saginaw River in both Wenonah and Veterans Park. For details see http://www.michigan.gov/gov/0,1607,7-168-23442-147539--,00.html.

__/ "RUNNERS" OPENS IN MT. PLEASANT -- Owner Bob Thompson alerted us to his new "Runners" specialty running store in Mt. Pleasant. You can find "Runners" at the following locations: Runners 4104 E. Wilder Bay City, MI 48706 (989) 686-8846

Runners 2316 S. Mission St. Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - TRACK AND FIELD

-- Kevin Sullivan, 1500 meter run, 3:32.65, Golden Gala, Rome, Italy, July 14.

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - ROAD RACING

-- Alan Brookes, Executive Director, Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, notified us of Ed Whitlock's amazing performance at the Nissan Foundation 5KI in Toronto, July 14:

"But it was Ed Whitlock, "The Master", who stole the show with an electrifying 18:45 performance at aged 75. Gunning for Maurice Tarrant's Canadian M75 record of 20:42, Whitlock destroyed the old mark. Running a 6:02 per mile pace, Ed placed 74th overall in a field of 1,114 finishers. That is correct--6:02 mile pace at aged 75, on a course re- certified just last year by an AIMS/IAAF 'Class A' measurer. Over the past 3 years, Mr. Whitlock has received extensive global media praise and innumerable accolades from his peers in the running community for his distance running exploits. Last November, he was honoured at ceremonies at the New York City Marathon as a "Runner's World Hero of the Year", and labelled "The Master". He received this alongside such running legends as Norway's Grete Waitz (9 time NYC Marathon winner) and young Olympic stars Justin Gatlin and Lauryn Williams."

Just how good is 18:45?

-- Two of Michigan's best runners in the 75-79 age group are Jerry Johncock, who ran 22:25 in 2003 and Jim Forshee who ran 22:23 in 2002.

-- Ed's age-graded time would be 12:56.22. Bob Kennedy's 5000 meter American record (track) is 12:58.21. See Ed run (about 5 minutes in the Marathon video): http://michiganrunner.tv/2005scotiabank/
