__/ KOZLOFF'S, MOTOR CITY STRIDERS RETIRI NG IN DECEMBER After more than 30 years directing and scoring dozens of D etroit area races every year, the Motor City Striders and club mainst ays Ed and Sue Kozloff are hanging it up. Ed spoke with Michigan Runner Publishe r Art McCafferty earlier today. The Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis in Bir mingham December 4, 2004 will be their last race; the Motor City St riders Annual Meeting on December 8, 2004 will be their last event. The Motor City Striders treasury will continue to support the women's and junior racing teams.

The number of Motor City Strider races has declined in recent years and the Striders have needed an infusion of new b l ood. One of the Motor City Striders' marquis events, the Heart of the Hi lls 5K and 10K in Bloomfield, ended this year--not for lack of pa rticipants, but because of difficulties with the course changes requir ed by Andover High School. Ed is currently notifying races that new director's will need to be found.

We'll certainly miss L e prechaun Ed starting the St. Patrick's Corktown 4 Mile each M arch, the experienced advice that Ed and Sue provided organizers of Mi chigan's biggest race, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Detroit , and the small-town feel of the Margaret Peruski Memorial 4 Mile Cross-Country race in Dearborn each November.

Michigan Runner selec ted Ed and Sue Kozlo f f among the "Top 25 Contributors" in July 2003 . At the time, runner Gary Wolfram recalled, "Ed was there when we used to pay $1 to run at Belle Isle and Popsicle sticks were handed out at the end. He m ade the Detroit Free Press Marathon in the early years. Ed was the prem iere race director for a couple of decades."

__/ RUNNING NETWORK TV INT ERVIEWS OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST BOB SCHUL Bob Schul is one of only five Americans to have won an Olymp i c gold medal in a distance race. Schul won the 5000 meter race in Tokyo in 1964, beating such notables as Bill Dellinger (3rd), Ron Cl arke, Michel Jazy (4th), Kip Keino (5th), Bill Bailey (6th) and Haro l d Norpoth (2nd). You can watch the last two laps of the exciting race at http:// www.runningpast.com/vintage_media.htm.

RUNOHIO Publisher Matt McGowan interviews Schul during the 2004 Olympic T rack & Field Trials in Sacramento. This show will be available by 9:00 pm today, July 21, 2004: http://michiganrunner.tv/2004schul/

__ / GREG MEYER NAMED CRIM ELITE ATHLETE COORDINATOR Crim Festival of Ra ces, Executive Director Sherlynn Everly announced last month that Greg Meyer will coordinate the field of elite athletes for the Crim Festiva l of Races August 28. Boston Marathon winner Meyer was also a four-time All American fo r cross-country and track at the University of Mich igan '74 - ' 77 and U.S. Cross Country Champi on '78. Fittingly, Meyer still holds the American record for the 10 Mile.

Meyer has honed his skills as an elite athlete coordinator for high profil e races by handling the Fifth Third River Bank Run's eilite field for more than 10 years.

__/ U.S. OLYMPIC TRACK & FIELD TEAM NAMES MICHIGAN ATHLETES

-- 10,000 MEN - DATHAN RITZENHEIN Ritz's injured foot affecte d his speed during the 10,000 meter race at the recent Olympic Team Tr ials, but it mattered that he finished the race in a slow 31:13.91 (s low for Trials' qualifiers, th a t is). Because Ritz had a chieved the "A" qualifying standard, then gutted it out and finished th e race, he remained eligible for the team. Meb Keflezighi decideded not to run the 10,000 in Athens, preferring his chances for a medal i n the marathon. Kef l ezighi's spot thus became a vailable for Ritz and he was named to the team on July 19.

-- DECATH LON - PAUL TEREK Paul Terek (WGAC/MSU/Livonia, MI) ran the race of his life in the last event of the decathlon to finish third at the trials. Te rek joins Trials surprise winner Bryan Clay and current World Champion Tom Papas on the decathlon team.

-- HIGH JUMP - JAMIE NIETO Jamie Nieto is a Sacramento native who was a 3 time All-American for E astern Michigan University, won the Trials on Su n day and has been ranked among the top 1 0 jumpers since 1998.

-- 100 M WOMEN - LAURYN WILLIAMS Lauren William s attended Detroit elementary and middle schools, and is now a s tudent at Miami University. Williams placed third in the 100m sp rints at the Trials, ahead of 5th place Marion Jones. She joins LaTasha Colander and Torri Edwards on the team.

-- 4 X 100 RELAY POOL - L AURYN WILLIAMS Lauryn Wi l liams top 3 finish in the 100 makes her an automatic choice for the 4 x 100 relay pool. Angela Williams, Consuella Moore and LaShaunta'3 Moore have a lso been named to the pool; however, any athlete already on the rost er may compete in a relay. Technically, shot put champion Laura Gerraugh ty could compete in a relay, b u t we are not likely to see that!

-- MARATHON - MEN Tr ent Briney was hoping that either Meb Keflezighi or Dan Browne would opt out of the marathon . Keflezighi did decide not to run the 10,000; but Browne apparently has decided to double. Decisions were required by Sunday, July 18, so it ap pears that no marathon slot will be available for Briney. Bummer.

__ / PROVISIONAL TEAM - FINAL TEAM TO BE NAMED AUGUST 9 -- 5,000 M MEN - TI M BROE Tim Broe must meet the Olympic "B" standard of 13:25.4 in or d er to claim his place on the Olym pic team. His winning Trials time of 13:27.26 left him short of the Ol ympic "A" standard of 13:21.5. He will run at the Norwich Union London Gr and Prix on July 30. Among the entrants in the race are legend H aile Gebrselasse and Alistair Cragg. Tim told us he is confident that h e can meet the stan d ard by the August 9 deadline.

-- 10,000M WOMEN - KAT IE MCGREGOR University of Mic higan All Amierican Katie McGregor finished fourth at the T rials; however, first place finisher Deena Kastor decided to giv e up her spot in the 10,000 to concentrate on the marathon in Athens. M cGregor has the "B" standard, but must run an "A" standard 31:45 to be na med to the team.
