__/ FIRE UP! STEVE'S RUN IS CELEBRATING 30 YEARS ON
SATURDAY, JULY 31
Ron Gunn is firing up for the 30th annual running of Steve's Run, the
Original Road and
Trail Race, in Dowagiac, Michigan. This 10K or 5K run or walk on the
roads, Southwest Michigan
College cross-country trails, on golf courses, in cemeteries and in the
restored Victorian
downtown of Dowagiac, is one of Michigan's must-do races. The 10K
also serves as the Michigan
Runner Race Series trail race.
As part of the 30th anniversary, Notre Dame coach Joe Piane will
conduct a clinic Friday
evening, in the new Matthews Conference Center East on the campus of
Southwest Michigan College.
Runners are also asked to wear one of their old Steve's Run/Road and
Trail shirts as part of the
celebration. You can check out the 2003 Steve's Run on Michigan
Runner TV:

__/ RITZ TURNS PRO
Last Wednesday, just after USA Track & Field named Dathan Ritzenhein
to the U.S. Olympic
10,000 meter team, Ritz announced that he was leaving his college
coach, Mark Wetmore, and
joining the ranks of professional runners. He signed with agent Peter
Stubbs, but has not
yet announced a sponsor. Ritz is forgoing his remaining college
eligibility, but will
stay in Colorado.
Ritz will head to Athens unless Mike Donnelly, the fourth place
finisher, is able to achieve the Olympic "A" standard of 27:49 by August
9. For more
information see Michael Sandrock's article:

__/ JIM RAMSEY, 1908-2004
Michigan Running legend, Jim Ramsey died Friday, July 23 at the age
of 96. Ramsey was about
70 years old when he began his running career. Along the way he set
numerous age group
records and inspired many of us who began running later in life. I first
met Jim Ramsey
when he stopped by the Michigan Runner booth at the Detroit Free
Press/Flagstar Bank
Marathon Expo the year to announce that he planned to run another
marathon to celebrate his
90th birthday. I had trouble believing that he was about to be 90; he
certainly looked much
younger. He did run (and finish) that marathon in Detroit, on a cold,
rainy, windy day in
October 1998 when those of us who did finish were particularly proud of
doing so. For more
on Jim Ramsey, see Ed Kozloff's article in the January/February 2000
issue of the Michigan
Runner: http://michiganrunner.com/feb00/ramsey.html.
Doug Kurtis also writes about Ramsey in today's Detroit Free Press:
http://www.freep.com/sports/othersports/running28e_20040728.htm.
__/ CRIM WINNER JOHN KORIR WILL RUN 10,000 FOR KENYA
One familiar name to look for during the Olympic games will be 2003
Crim 10 Mile
winner, John Korir. Korir was named to one of three 10,000 meter spots
on the Kenyan
Olympic team. Korir and Moses Mosop won their places by finishing first
and second at the
Kenyan trials; the third member of the team is named later. Korir won the
Quad Cities Bix 7
mile road race last Saturday and will compete in the Zurich Golden
League meet in
Switzerland on August 3.
