__/ MIRACLE MILE TONIGHT IN WINDSOR, ONTARIO

This weekend offers a good opportunity to take in world-class track and field. Tonight, the Pam Am Junior Games at the University of Windsor-- just across the Detroit River from Detroit-- begins with opening ceremonies and a non-junior event, The Miracle Mile. Look at who's running that mile: Canadian record holder in the mile, Kevin Sullivan; Andrew Ellerton, the Michigan Wolvering who ran a sub-four mile last summer; Olympian and former 5000m champion, Adam Goucher; Gaylen Rupp, American junior record holder in the 2000m, 3000m and 5000m; Mike Woods, Canadian junior record holder in the 3000m, Jason Lunn (US), Brian Lindsay (US), Ryan McKenzie (Canada), and Cristiano Mauricio. Events will be run on the brand-new, fast Mondo track atthe University of Windsor. For details see

http://www.panamswindsor.ca/.

__/ PAN AMERICAN JUNIOR GAMES IN WINDSOR, ONTARIO, JULY 28-31

__/ STEVE'S RUN, THE ORIGINAL ROAD AND TRAIL RACE, SATURDAY, JULY 20, DOWAGIAC

Really fast competition, a scenic and challenging course, and a worthy cause, are among the features of Steve's Run in Dowagiac. 10K, 5K and 1K races begin at 9:00 am in downtown Dowagiac, about 20 miles South of I94, exit 56.

High school and college cross-country teams from Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana (think Notre Dame) typically show up at the starting line to race through a golf course, a cemetery, a wild life refuge, the Southwest Michigan College campus, and the College's famous roadrunner trails. The race is also a fund-raiser for cancer research and scholarships in memory of Steve Briegel, a 1988 honors graduate of SMC who died of cancer in 1990.

Watch video of Steve's Run at http://michiganrunner.tv/2004stevesrun/. Register on site Friday night and Saturday morning or online at http://www.swmich.edu/fireup/stevesrun/registration.html

__/ GRAND ISLAND TRAIL MARATHON AND 10K, MUNISING, SATURDAY, JULY 30

Those of us who love the Upper Peninsula now have another adventure event to get us there. Jeff Crumbaugh, the genius behind the Keweenaw Trail Running Festival, founded this new race which will introduce runners to Grand Island.

The marathon follows the perimeter trail of Grand Island, with vistas of Lake Superior and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The 10K loops through the island's interior. Registration and packet pick-up go through 9:00 pm Friday night at the wonderful Falling Rock Cafe in Munising. Food at Falling Rock is terrific and so is the live music and on- site bookstore.

There is also a Trail Running Gear Expo at Bay Furnace Campground. http://www.algercounty.org

__/ FOUR WEEKS UNTIL CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES

The Crim Festival of Races Offices in downtown Flint were hopping Wednesaday.

Race Director Deb Kiertzner & CEO Gerry Myers are cooking up enhancements for the 29th running August 27. Dr. Anthony Ellis's new book, "Stories of the Crim Experience" will be on sale at the Crim merchandise booth at the Standard Federal Bank Sports and Fitness Expo. The starting line feature a flyover and a salute to area military families. Elite athlete coordinator,

Greg Meyer, is continuing to bring in many of the world's top runners. Video coverage will be better than ever: ABC12 will be showing the finish line, live, on a jumbotron at the Crim Festival Lot. WFUM's Jim Gavor and his crew will be contributing their 400 years of Crim experience to the PBS broadcast coverage of the Crim 10 Mile. Michigan Runner TV will also be capturing events for the Internet. We'll keep you posted on more Crim developments in coming days. Check out the new, improved Website for schedule details and to register online: http://crim.org

__/ BAUMAN'S RUNNING & FITNESS SHOP

Perhaps it was the "running-shoe sale". Perhaps it was the first cool day in a couple of weeks. In any case, Mark Bauman's Running & Walking Shop on Hill Road in Flint was busy on a Wednesday afternoon. We found out about Bauman's great solution for old running shoes: leave your old shoes, get $5 off the price of your new ones. Bauman's will refurbish the old shoes and donate them to either the Carriage Town Ministries or the Women's Shelter in Flint.

__/ MIKE WOOLSEY IS NATIONAL GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COACH

Carter Sherline alerted us to this good news:

"Mike Woolsey, girls cross country coach at Jackson Lumen Christi recently earned NATIONAL GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COACH by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. This was in addition to National Coach of the Year honors bestowed by the National High School Coaches Assn and the National Federation of Coaches. Mike is the first coach to earn all three honors in the same year!"

__/ WHITLOCK WILL MEET RUTER AT SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON

In a rematch of the ageless titans: Ed Whitlock vs. Joop Ruter confirmed for Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, September 25th. Race director Alan Brookes confirmed this week that the celebrated re-match of septuagenarians Ed Whitlock [Canada] and Joop Ruter [Holland] is definitely "on" for September 25th at the flat, fast, 6th Annual Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Ed Whitlock astounded everyone last September when he clocked 2:54:49 for the marathon at age 73. Since then, in the words of Marc Bloom of the NY Times, he has deservedly "been heralded like an Olympic champion". A world apart, in Holland, 71 year old Joop Ruter heard of Whitlock's original sub-3:00 marathon in 2003, and decided in the Spring of 2004 to take a crack at it. At the Rotterdam Marathon that April, he was on pace to break the record until around 35k, when he started to cramp, and came home in 3:02:45.

If you're not ready for the full 42k, come join John "The Penguin" Bingham and 6,000 others in our Half-marathon and be finished in time to cheer Ed and Joop across the line. Register online at http://www.torontowaterfrontmarathon.com. And Air Canada has a major seat sale on for North American runners: Canadians must book by July 26th, runners from US cities by August 2nd, good for travel through September 30th. For more on Ed Whitlock and Joop Ruter, see http://www.runohio.com/news/07-25-05Toronto_marathon.html

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - TRACK AND FIELD

-- Nate Brannen, 1500m, (3:36.0), DN Galan, Sweden, July 26, got the "A" world championship standard by .2 seconds. Still awaiting word from Athletics Canada about whether or not Brannen will be added to the Canadian world championship team.

-- Lindsay Gallo won the 1500 at the Helsinki Grand Prix, but missed the "A" standard by .23 seconds.

-- Tim Broe, 5000m, 13:13.93, 6th, London Crystal Palace, July 22
