__/ FORD FIELD FINISH FOR DETROIT
Detroit, Michigan - Ford Field will be host to the 25th Annual Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon's official finish line on Sunday, October 6, 2002, race organizers and Ford Field officials announced today. The Marathon, presented by Greektown Casino, is celebrating its 25th anniversary and has plans for many spectacular improvements to the race course, including the finish in the soon-to-be opened Ford Field.

Ford Field, the 1.85 million square foot development located in downtown Detroit opening in August, will be home to the Detroit Lions, will host Super Bowl XL in 2006, and will feature restaurants, entertainment venues, hospitality space and commercial offices.

Race organizers and Ford Field officials have been meeting for several months planning the Ford Field finish and the relocation of the Marathon's Whole Foods Market Health & Fitness Expo to the Ford Field complex. The finish line will be located on the field inside Ford Field and all race participants, including marathoners, walkers, wheelers, relay team members and 5K participants will cross the official finish line. Ford Field's audio/visual equipment and 96 foot long video screens will be used to enhance the experience for spectators sitting in the stands waiting to see their friends and family cross the finish line.

"A finish line experience at Ford Field for both the runners and the spectators truly epitomizes our organization's mission of providing an extraordinary experience for the ordinary person." said Patricia Ball, Race Director. "Working with the people in the Ford Field organization has been wonderful and they have contributed to the enthusiasm for providing race participants with a one-of-a-kind finish experience that will not only showcase this beautiful new facility but also put Detroit on the map as a marathon destination." __/ VOLKSLAUFE, JULY 4, 2002
Framkenmuth's mighty Volkslaufe (the people's race) is now in its third decade. At the Volkslaufe you can stay overnight, watch massive fireworks, run in the morning, then replace calories with a chicken dinner and beer in their lively park. Expect a great crowd for the 2K, 5K, 10K, 20K runs and the 5K walk. Jim Beal passed on this incentive: age group winners can fill their beer stein trophies with free beer. The 20K is the Michigan Runner Race Series 20K championship and awards points toward the Michigan Runner of the Year award. http:/www.frankenmuth.org/volkslau.htm

__/ RUN AND WALK FOR FUNDS, SATURDAY, JULY 6, 2002
Since it began 23 years ago, this scenic road race has raised more than $50,000 for the Leelanaw Chapter, American Cancer Society. The two mile starts at 9:00 am; the 10K, which provides a breathtaking view of Grand Traverse Bay, follows at 9:20 am. A walk follows at 9:30 am. Call (231) 386-5341 or email gwanderson@chartermi.net.--Charles Douglas McEwen.

__/ HAPPY BIRTHDAY TITLE IX
While we are celebrating the nation's 226th birthday, we'd also like to take note of the 30th birthday of the Title IX legislation. It's hard to imagine that my high school in Hannibal, Missouri had only a single sport for girls before Title IX. The varsity tennis team had five members; there were no junior varsity and no intramural sports of any kind. My brothers excelled in several sports; two earned all-state honors in track and field. It didn't occur to most of us that there was something wrong with this picture. Fast forward thirty years to the same Hannibal High School in 2002 where my niece Ellie plays championship tennis, basketball and soccer. Thank-you, Francie Kraker Goodridge, Ann Arbor attorney Jean King, and other pioneers who paved the way for Ellie's opportunities and for all the high school and college women who participate in school sports.

__/ JIM BEAL
We noticed someone wearing a Michigan - USA Track and Field t-shirt at the Warren wineries booth at last weekend's Michigan Wine and Food Festival at Meadowbrook. We introduced ourselves to Jim Beal, who took a few minutes to talk to us about his running career. Jim holds the US 70-74 age group record (2:36:52) for the indoor 800 m. Last year he took second at an International meet. Jim's success in the 800 came when his new coach, Bill Stewart suggested that the middle distances would suit Jim's speed. Jim does run road races occasionally. Look for him to collect a stein at the Volkslaufe on Thursday.
