__/ USATF OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS, TRACK & FIELD START TODAY The trials begin at 3:30 pm (PDT) today Friday, July 9, go through Tuesday, July 13, take a 2 day break, then resume Thursday, July 15 an d go through Sunday, July 18.

Live TV coverage of the trials will be shown on USA network both Fridays from 11:00 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. NBC will have live coverage during t he finals Saturday and Sunday, July 17 & 18. Michigan Runner photogr apher Carter Sherline will be covering events during the entire eight day s of the trials. Your editor will be covering events from Thursday, July 15 through Sunday, July 18.

MORNING RUN: ST. JOSEPH

The St. Joseph waterfront proved to be a wonderful spot for an early mo rning run earlier this week. Among the sights are Silver Beach and the b reakwater, historic Victorian architecture, the sculpture garden at the Krasl Art Center, monuments galore, outdoor cafes open early, and the famous Maids of the Mist fountain. Downtown St. Joseph also has lots of interesting shops, free parking, free trolley rides, free bicycles, and beach chairs, surf boards a nd kayaks for rent. Dick Beardsley says, "You don't have to be a 2:08 marathoner to enjoy the benefits that running marathons can bring you." Dick's camp is Septembber 7-12 at Rainbow Resort, Waubun, Minnesota. Daily seminars and runs will inclu de hill training, tempo running, long- distance running and speed work. Staff includes Joe Henderson, Rich Benyo, Rhonda Provost, Bill Wenmark, Mike Dunlap, camp director Jan Seeley, and, of course, Dick Beardsley. __/ RON GUNN'S COACHES CLINIC: CROSS COUNTRY & DISTANCE RUNNING, 8/28/04

Ron Gunn, the winningest coach in NJCAA history, is presenting a clinic at the request of many coaches. The clinic is at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac (home of Steve's Run the Original Road and Trail Race) and features a full day of training, "learn by doing" sessions, Fun Fartlek drills, Motivation and more fun and useful stuff. The clinic is intended for coaches and runners , beginners and experts. It's a good thing Doug Goodhue pays attention to Michigan Runner Rac e Series Results. Doug wrote last week: "Shouldn't Jim Carlton and mys elf be included in the overall master standings at the Reeds Lake 10k Run?"

-- Unknown finisher, Volkslaufe 10K. Yes, this is true. Olympic race walker, Gary Morgan ran the Volkslaufe 10K, having put aside race- walking for the time being.

__ "He (Riley McLincha-- the drubbler) can actually run 10 miles with those balls."
