__/__/____/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Coming down the stretch, all I wanted to do was break the record.
When I crossed and saw the time I just wanted to scream."
-- Mike Woods, on breaking the Canadian Junior Record in the Mile at
the Pan Am Junior Games non-junior event: the "Miracle Mile". Wood's
3:57.48 broke Mark Olsen's 22 year old 3:58.08.
__/ RUN, DON'T WALK TO SIGN UP FOR WCSN VIDEO
We planned last Friday around getting to an Internet connection or WiFi
hot spot by 2:15 pm. The plan was to watch the Webcast of the Bislett
Games in Oslo, Norway-- a trial run for the IAAF World Championships
in Helsinki next week. The Webcast is a brand new collaboration
between USAT&F and MLB.
The site was too busy to handle the traffic, so I didn't get
in. On the message boards, I was able to follow the 5000 meter race in
which Tim Broe ran with the leaders and dusted Meb Keflezghi, Abdi
Abdiriham, Jonathan Riley, and Robert Cheseret (he's the one who beat
Ritz for the 2004 NCAA 5000m outdoor title). Tuesday night, the archive
was up and the show is absolutely terrific. The show is all action,
showing high jump, javelin and triple jump as the 5000 meter race
developed. Note to USATF: we loved the International perspective--
keep the British commentators. Add US if you wish, but make that a
different feed. For $4.95 (really) you can see the Bislet Games archive
and get the IAAF World Championships.
Michigan Runner has been doing Internet video of track & field for 4
years; we're thrilled that the technology and the USATF effort will bring
us the Worlds. http://www.wcsn.com
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: STEVE'S RUN 2005
Catch the 1,000+ speedsters who take on the terrain of the 10K and 5K
31st annual Steve's Run on Michigan Runner TV. The race is an
important community event and raises funds for cancer research in

__/ MANY MEMORABLE GREAT PERFORMANCES: ROADS, TRACK &
FIELD
-- Sisters ALYSON and AMY KOHLMEIER each had remarkable
performances last weekend. Alyson won the 3,000 meter gold medal at
the Pan Am Junior Championships in Windsor, July 30. Alyson will be a
sophomore at the University of Michigan. Amy, a Notre Dame junior in
September, won the Steve's Run 10K among tough competition. Both
Kohylmeiers are from Sarnia, Ontario, and both won titles at the
prestigious Portage Invitational Cross Country meet-- Amy in 2002 and
Alyson in 2003.
-- Eastern Michigan athletes NEAL NAUGHTON, JOSH PERRIN and
JACOB DUBOIS are officially world-class athletes after earning medals
at the Pan Am Junior games. Naughton and Perrin made it a 1-2 sweep
of the 10,000 meter event Saturday night. Neal is the 10,000 meter
champion (30:12.14); Josh is runner-up (30:19.53). Dubois won a
bronze medal in the 800m Saturday night. His 1:51.01 was 2.5 seconds
better than his previous personal best.
-- TIM BROE, 5000m, 6th, Bislett Games, Oslo, 13:11.77, personal best.
Tim tells us he wished he'd gotten under 13:10.
-- BOAZ CHEBOIYWO, 5000m, Bislett Games, Oslo, 13:19.56, personal
best.Unfortunately, Boaz tells us he is out for the season with an achilles
injury.
-- MIKE WOODS, Ottawa/Michigan, set a new Canadian Junior record in
the mile (3:57.48) at the Pan Am Junior Games Miracle Mile Thursday
evening. This was also Woods' first sub-4:00 mile and he was
absoluted elated. Woods nearly outkicked winner Adam Goucher
(3:56.15) in the non-junior event. Woods' mile record broke Mike Olsen's
22 year old 3:58.08. Sunday night, Woods won the 1500m and set a
new meet record with his 3:45.72
-- LINDSEY GALLO, Freehold, NY/Michigan/Reebok won the 1500m at
the Helsinki Grand Prix, but it was a bittersweet victory. She missed the
World Championship "A" standard and a place on the US team by .23
seconds.
-- TIM MOORE, Novi/Notre Dame, successfully defended his Steve's
Run 10K title with a 32:33. The 2002 Footlocker champion said the
Notre Dame cross country team should be a serious contender in NCAA
Division I this Fall.
-- Olympian GARY MORGAN reported in after hauling in two bronze
medals at the World Masters Games in Edmonton, Alberta last week.
Morgan ran the 10, then went to town in his specialty, the 10K racewalk.
His 54:50 won a bronze medal in race-walking's very-competitive 45-49
age group. A few days later, Morgan said his 25:37 in the 5K racewalk
was one of his best races in years-- good for another bronze. Next
games will be October, 2009 in Sydney, Australia.
-- HOWARD BOOTH, Eastern Michigan professor of biology, recently
took home the silver medal in the pole vault at the National Senior
Olympics in Pittsburgh, Pa. Booth, 61, cleared 9 feet to capture second
place in the 60-64 age group. "After a 39-year hiatus, I thought I would
dust off my pole vaulting skills," said Booth, who was a pole vaulter for
EMU's track and field team when he was an undergraduate student.
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD
--WINDSOR, ONTARIO (July 28) The University of Windsor's beautiful,
brand new stadium had a stunning Grand Opening with the Pan
American Junior Games last weekend. Thursday's opening ceremonies
featured the parade of athletes from 45 countries, including 3 from Haiti,
25 from Trinidad & Tobago, and16 from Cuba. Opening night also
featured a world-class field going after sub-4:00's in the Miracle Mile--
named after the first race in which two runners (John Landy and Roger
Bannister) both ran sub-4:00 in the same race.
The crowd got what it cheered for: Olympian Adam Goucher's 3:56.15
and University of Michigan sophomore Mike Woods' 3:57.48-- Woods'
first sub 4:00 mile. Goucher and Woods were both elated. We had a
chance to wish good luck to Eastern Michigan's Josh Perrin and Neal
Naughton, who earned both US spots in the 10,000m event.
--DOWAGIAC, MICHIGAN (JULY 30) - The 31st annual Steve's Run
attracted more than 1,000 for the 10K, 5K, and 1K events. What's always
striking about the Steve's Run field is the large number of really fast
runners-- high school and college cross country runners gearing up for
the Fall Season. On the10K course which includes trails through a golf
course, a cemetery and over obstacles, 48 people ran under 39:00
minutes. You can see how runners take hay bales on the latest
Michigan Runner TV:
http://michiganrunner.tv.
--NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO (AUGUST 3 & 4) - Nothing quite like a
morning run along Niagara Parkway with views of the Falls, and dams of
the Niagara River. The Falls were hopping on a high-season day and
the Clifton Hill district was a kid's paradise-- a carnival-like atmosphere
somewhere between Disney and Las Vegas. We're looking forward to a
return in October for the Casino Niagara International Marathon.
__/ DAN DEYO LEAVING FOR NEW MEXICO
Former Eastern Michigan coach Bob Parks reports:
"Dan Deyo, a former distance runner for us, who sometimes doubled as
a student-trainer on our XC trips, wrote that he has accepted a teaching
job for this fall in Santa Fe, NM." We'll miss the dozens of low-key,
affordable races that Dan put on at Belle Isle.
