__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: SOUTHWESTERN MICHIGAN COLLEGE
EXTREME SPORTS
Ron Gunn, the first Michigan Runner of the Year in 1980, and Race
Director of Steve's Run in Dowagiac, keeps the fitness challenges
coming for Southwestern Michigan College students and local
residents. Among the extreme sports is a class on hiking the Grand
Canyon, rim to rim. The hike is more than 23 miles with the last half
being the climb up. We interview several veterans of the Grand Canyon
hikes about the training challenges, including marathoner Thom
Janssen. Ron Gunn talks about white-water rafting, rock-climbing, sea-
kayaking, and day hikes to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. http://

__/ MICHIGAN CLASSIC RACES THIS WEEKEND
-- CRYSTAL LAKE TEAM MARRATHON, BEULAH, SATURDAY,
AUGUST 13
Head up to beautiful Crystal Lake in Northwest Lower Michigan to watch
or run the Crystal Lake Team Marathon. Teams of 5 run relay legs
around Crystal Lake. There will be fast teams and slow teams, but you
can bet on fierce competition among the teams. Rumors fly about who
will show up.
The 25th anniversary edition begins at 8:00 am, downtown Beulah. High
School teams get a break on registration fees. Scott Sullivan describes
Crystal Lake as his candidate for heaven
(http://michiganrunner.net/news/crystal2002.html).
Call (231) 882-5801 for lodging info; (231) 882-7212 for race info.
-- RUN THRU HELL, HELL (PINCKNEY), SATURDAY, AUGUST 13
Harrison & Dolores Hensley contribute their time to dozens of races in
Michigan each year, then manage to find more time to put on this
classic 10 mile race. There is also a 4.8 mile race (characterized as the
weenie race by Harrison). Start is 8:00 am at Hell Creek Ranch on
Cedar Lake Road at Patterson Lake Road. Get there early and do not
park on Patterson Lake Road. Call (734) 878-6640 for more info.
__/ NEW CRIM TEAM LOOKS GOOD WARMING UP
The media got their first in depth look at the new Crim team on
Tuesday, and it was an impressive affair. Framed against a beautiful
fairway at Swartz Creek Golf Club, CEO Gerry Myers, CEO and Race
Director, Deb Kiertzner, provided a glimpse of what will be happening at
the Crim. It was actually more of a tease, as they said they would
announce all of their plans during the week of the Crim Festival of
Races. The team looks fresh, confident, and eager to take
The Crim Festival of Races to the next level.
On hand to lend their support were Mark Yonan, Chairman of the Crim
Board of Directors; Sally Jeager, Chairman of the Sesquicentennial
Commission; Patsy Lou Williamson, the Mayor's wife, an honorary chair
of that Commission; Andrea Kangelaris, Public Relations Executive for
ACDelco; and Jerry Preston, Executive Director of the Flint Area
Convention and Visitors Bureau. At first blush, this team seems ready to
roll. The Crim torch has been successfully passed.

__/ HOW THEY ARE FARING: MICHIGAN ATHLETES AT WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIPS
It was really tough to watch Kevin Sullivan and Nick Willis miss
qualifying for the 1500m final on tactics, but it was thrilling to see Lauryn
Williams' win and victory lap smile.

"I didn't get any good ones. It's a pretty, much disappointing day all

will help me down the road."-- USATF

Brown's throw of 61.91 missed qualifying for the finals by one place.
-- Chad Johnson, Chetek, WI/Hansons-Brooks, marathon, US

American record in the W65 division of the 10,000m race walk final,
USATF Masters. The 68-year-old Berman bettered the previous record
of 1:00:33.0 set in 2001 by Beverly LaVeck.
-- Debbie Topham (Mayville, Mich.) is another women's 10,000m race
walk champions, age group W50, time: 59:21.00.
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD
-- Clark Lake. The 12K Run Clark Lake ranks right up there with scenic
courses. The Beach Bar & Restaurant is a terrific start and finish area
and Adrian's running store "Running with E's" offered deals on shoes
and apparel in the gorgeous outdoor setting. Along with more than 700
runners, we enjoyed the 30th anniversary of the event and the
wonderful hospitality of the Clark Lake Community. Run Clark Lake will
be featured in an upcoming Michigan Runner TV show.
