__/ WINDSOR, BRIDGE AND TUNNEL ARE BACK FOR 25TH MARATHON We are as excited as Detroit Free Press Publisher, Heath Meriwether, who announced the course for the 25th Detroit Free Press Flagstar Bank Marathon at a press conference hosted by Greektown Casino on Monday. The course will again incorporate the Ambassador Bridge, the Windsor waterfront and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. The route, designed by Doug Kurtis, continues around Belle Isle, through historic Indian Village, and by Greektown with a finish at Ford Field, the new home of the Detroit Lions. After the traditional international route was nixed following the events of 9/11 last year, race and city officials doubted that the international route could happen again. That it did, is a credit to the determination and perseverance of Race Director Pat Ball and the support of customs, city and federal officials. Mayor Michael D. Hurst of Windsor and Derek Miller, representing Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, both saw the marathon as a symbol of the free and open borders between Windsor and Canada. In further good news, the Immigration and Naturalization Service will have a booth at the Marathon Expo to allow runners to register until the day before the October 6 race.

__/ ST. IGNACE FITNESS EXPO, AUGUST 17-18 You won't want to miss this weekend's events at the annual St. Ignace Fitness Expo. Start off Saturday with either the 5K run, the 10K run or a 5K walk along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Events begin at 8:30 am at the Father Marquette Memorial. Then, Saturday night, treat yourself to spectacular views of the Mackinac Bridge on the Mighty Mac Boat Cruise aboard a Star Line ferry beginning at 7:30 pm. Finally, top it all off on Sunday with the Mighty Mac Scenic Bike Tour beginning at 6:00 am. The tour is a ride, not a race, and includes crossing the Mackinac Bridge plus 20,40 and 50 mile tour routes. For lodging and more information see http://www.stignace.com or 800-338-6660.

__/ JORDAN DESILETES' STEEPLECHASE MARK IS GOLDEN Eastern Michigan University steeplechaser Jordan Desilets won the 3000 meter steeplechase in 8:52.10 at the PowerAde North America, Central America & Caribbean (NACAC) Under-25 Track & Field Championships in San Antonio last weekend. In the 10,000 meter event, Brian Sell's 30:16.29 was just .03 off the winning time of 30:16.26.

__/ WISNIEWSKI WINS HALF MARATHON GOLD We were not surprised when University of Michigan All-American Mike Wisniewski was named to the U.S. NACAC team. We were just a little surprised to see that Mike would be running the half-marathon, since the 13.1 mile half marathon is a tad longer than the usual 10K event in which college athletes compete. Smart move: no one else in the under-25K event tackled the half marathon and Wisniewski had the difficult course, the gold medal, and a terrific time of 1:10:05 to himself.

__/ WORLD RECORD HOLDER CATHERINE NDEREBA TO SPEAK AT CRIM Catherine Ndereba is not only returning to the Crim Festival of Races next week to defend her 10 mile title, but she also will be sharing her wisdom and insight at several speaking engagements. The marathon world record holder (2:18:47) will speak at the New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church on Wednesday, August 21 from 6-8:00 pm. The Church is at 1035 East Carpenter Road, Flint (corner of Saginaw Street and Carpenter Road). Her second engagement will be at the Crim Running Clinic at the Riverfront Character Inn during the Crim Sports and Fitness Expo, Friday, August 23, 3:30 pm. Finally, you can meet Catherine and all the Crim elite athletes at the International Institute's International Festival at 6:00 pm on Saturday, August 24 after the race. The Institute is at 515 Stevens Street, Flint and will be showing WFUM's same-day broadcast of the Crim 10 Mile race.

__/ FORMER CADILLAC, U-M RUNNER EGGLE KILLED The Arizona Republic has reported that Kris Eggle, a grad of Cadillac High and the University of Michigan, was killed in a shootout with two fugitives just north of the Mexican border at Organ Pipe National Monument in Arizona. Eggle was valedictorian and also a 9:30 two-miler at Cadillac. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1995 and joined the National Park Service. He would have turned 29 on August 25. -- Jeff Hollobaugh .__/ SUMMER EVENT CALENDAR * Thursday, August 15, 2002, Joints in Motion Run & Walk 5KR/W, 1/2 K dash Flint 6:45 pm 810.238.5981 810.230.8292 * Thursday, August 15, 2002, Midland Bullock Creek 989-835-8216 * Thursday, August 15, 2002, Midland Bullock Creek Jr. High/Age Group Track Midland 989.835.8216 * Friday, August 16, 2002 Howell Melon Run 10KR, 5KR, 1 MFR, 1/4 MR Howell 6:30 pm Denny Troshak 517-546-0693 * Saturday, August 17, 2002: Please note: the Chelsea to Dexter 10K Road Race date has been changed to October 19, 2002, 8:30 am Julie Wagner 734.665.2405 * Saturday, August 17, 2002, Clarence Catallo Run for SCAMP 5KR Clarkston 9 am 248-620-1882 scamprun@yahoo * Saturday, August 17, 2002, Falcon Run 5KR, 1 MFR Dearborn 8:45 am 313-562-1990 248.888.9029 * Saturday, August 17, 2002Hartford Law Enforcement Torch Run 5KR/W, 1MFR Hartford 7:00 am Jan Kelly 616.621.2477 * Saturday, August 17, 2002, Hotter than Stan's Kiln 5KR, 5KW Ann Arbor 8 am Kathleen Gina 734-657-0214 twodogsrunning@yahoo.com * Saturday, August 17, 2002, Mitchell's Run Through Rockford 5KR/W Rockford 9:00 am Steve Peterson 616.863.9168 mitcellsrun@att.net www.nitchellsrun.org * Saturday, August 17, 2002, St. Ignace Classic 10KR, 5KR/W St Ignace 8:30 am Janet Peterson 800-338-6660 800-338-6660, sicc@up.net www.stignace.com * Saturday, August 17, 2002, St. Ignace Fitness Expo 5KR, 10KR/W, Kid's Run St Ignace 8:30 am 906-643-8717 1-800-338-6660 info@stignace.com www.stignace.com * Saturday, August 17, 2002, Standard Federal Bank 10K 10KR Kalamazoo 8:00 am Shawn Platt 877.904.5408, www.standardfederalbank10K.com * Saturday, August 17, 2002, Sunset 5K 20KR, 10KR, 5KR, 1 MR, Ann Arbor 7:00 pm Ann Stewart 734-482-4388 734-332-3981, A1Boyd@aol.com www.athleticventures.com * Saturday, August 17, 2002, Three Rivers Triathlon & Duathlon Tri: 1KS, 40KB, 10KR, Du: 5KR, 40KB, 10KR Three Rivers, Emmanual Millet 616.278.2075, emillet@aquamantri.com cooltri.com * Sunday, August 18, 2002, Crazy 8 Extreme Trail Run 8 MR Ishpeming 906-486-8164 * Sunday, August 18, 2002 Grand Woods 5 K 5KR Lansing 9 am Chuck Block 517-702-0226 runningfoundation@ARQ.net * Sunday, August 18, 2002 Lapeer Kiwanis 5K & 10K 10KR, 5KR, Lapeer John Gault 810-659-6493 GRaceMgt@aol.com www.gaultracemanagement.com * Sunday, August 18, 2002 Newburgh Lake Triathlon swim,bike,run Livonia John Gault 810-659-6493 419.885.2089 GRaceMgt@aol.com www.gaultracemanagement.com * Sunday, August 18, 2002 St. Ignace Fitness Expo Scenic Bike Tour 25MB, 40MB, 50MB St Ignace 8:30 am 906-643-8717 1-800-338-6660 info@stignace.com, www.stignace.com * Tuesday, August 20, 2002 Belle Isle Summer Cross Country 5KR, 2KR youth run, 2 MR Detroit 6 pm Dan Deyo 313-610-1188 channelkats@worldnet.att.net * Tuesday, August 20, 2002, Mulick Park Co-ed Cross Country Relay X-C relay Grand Rapids 7:00 pm Russ Danhof. 616.243.9885 * Saturday, August 24, 2002, Crim Festival of Races 10 MR, 8KR/W, 5KR/W, 1 MR/W, Teddy Bear Trot Flint 8:00 am, Sherlynn Everly 810.235.3396 810.235.3396 crim@tir.com www.crim.org Includes Crim Kids Classic, 1 Mile, Michigan Runner Race Series 10 Mile * Saturday, August 24, 2002, Hastings Summerfest Run 10KR, 5KR, 5KW Hastings 8:30 Laura Kennet 616.948.3139, laurakennet@netscape.net * Saturday, August 24, 2002, Paul Bunyan 5K & 10K Run 5KR, 10KR Oscoda 6:00 pm Kenny 480.836.0432, kenny3disciplines@netzero.net www.3disciplines.com * Saturday, August 24, 2002, Paul Bunyan Half Ironman Triathlon & Duathlon Challenge swim, bike, run, run Oscoda 7:00 am, Kenny, 480.836.0432 kenny3disciplines@netzero.net, www.3disciplines.com * Sunday, August 25, 2002, Rotary Charity Waterfront Bridge Run/Walk 4 MR/W South Portland, Maine 9 am 207-773-2533 * Sunday, August 25, 2002, Van Ettan Lake Triathlon & Duathlon 1MS, 40KB, 10KR, 5KR Oscoda 8:00 am Kenny, 480.836.0432 kenny3disciplines@netzero.net, www.3disciplines.com * Monday, August 26, 2002, Belle Isle Preseason Cross Country Scrimmage 5__KR, 2KR youth run Detroit 4:30 pm Dan Deyo, 313-610-1188 channelkats@worldnet.att.net * Thursday, August 29, 2002, Centerline EarlyBird x-c meet 810-757-6660 * Thursday, August 29, 2002, Glen Lake Invite x-c meet Glen Lake 231-334-30 * Saturday, August 31, 2002, Corunna Cross Country, x-c Corunna 989-743-3441 * Saturday, August 31, 2002 Milford Labor Day 30K, Milford, 8:00 am, Doug Klingensmith DKlingens1@aol.com, www.laborday30k.com, Michigan Runner Race Series 30K * Saturday, August 31, 2002, Run Like the Wind 10KR, 5KR Westland 9:30 am Chuck Block 248.921.7110, runningfoundation@arq.net
