__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK - "Last night was the greatest experience I have ever witnessed in Track and Field. . . . Felix Sanchez won and set a meet record. The crowd went even crazier. His victory lap draped in the Dominican flag took nearly 40 minutes. He was followed by 35 camera men throughout the victory lap. The crowd cheered the entire time; it was great. I lay in bed last night realizing that I had witnessed something special ,, not the performance as much as everything else. I was also very jealous that we cannot experience something like that in the U.S. We are starving for a hero and the Dominican Republic has one." -- Kevin Hanson, from the Pan Am Games, Dominican Republic, August 7, 2003, http://hansons-running.com/sp/cat=messageBoard.

__/ GREAT RACING THIS WEEKEND:

BILL'S RUN RICHMOND RUN, AUG. 16 - Richmond's Beebe Street Memorial Park hosts the sixth annual 8K andn 5K races, plus a mile fun run. All start at 8:00 am and are held in memory of William K. Hamilton. Entry fee includes post-race refreshments and therapeutic leg massage. http://www.ci.richmond.mi.us or (586) 727.7571, ext. 105.

STANDARD FEDERAL 10K, KALAMAZOO, AUG. 16 - Prize $, great post-race party and the Michigan Challenge are all features of this third race in the Standard Federal 10K series. In the Michigan Challenge, Michigan residents who complete at least three of the four races will compete for The Standard Federal Bank 10K Series Prize Money in addition to each individual Race Prize Money purse. Athletes finishing among the top 15 male or the top 15 female Michigan residents will accrue points towards the Series Prize Money. Individual scoring will be based on their three best Race finishes of the 10K Series.

RUNNING FIT TRAIL RUN, LAINGSBURG, AUG. 16 - Running Fit is hosting the Running Fit Trail Run at Sleepy Hollow State Park in Laingsburg. Races begin at 9:00 am. Come out for a 10 or 5 mile romp in the woods. You can registrar in person at Running Fit East Lansing Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. or race morning 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

__/ E-MAIL TAKES A VACATION / PLEASE RESEND-This has been an interesting week; I think technology was telling me it needs a vacation. No email from Sunday through Wednesday got through to "jennie@glsp.com". The problem was one of domain name servers (don't ask unless you want the 3 hour course on internetworking). For the moment, if you sent me a message last week, I'd appreciate it if you'd resend.

__/ TEREK, SHAY, VERRAN NAMED TO USATF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field on Wednesday announced its final Team USA roster for the 2003 IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships August 23-31 in Paris. The United States names to its World Championships team the top three finishers in each event at the 2003 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by Verizon (June 19-22 at Stanford) who have achieved the IAAF "A" qualifying standard by August 13, 2003. In most cases, this is the top three finishers overall. If the U.S. champion in an event has achieved only the "B" standard and two or more competitors at the USA Championships have the "A" standard, those athletes with the "A" standard were selected to the team. If the champion has the "B" standard but only one athlete in the field at USA Outdoors has achieved the "A" standard, then the champion (or next-highest finisher who has the "B" standard, and accepts the position) was selected to the team.

For more information on Team USA and the World Outdoor Championships, including athlete and staff bios, visit www.usatf.org -- USATF Press Release

Michigan Residents named are

Marathon Ryan Shay East Jordan, Mich.

Marathon Clint Verran Rochester Hills, Mich.

Decathlon Paul Terek Livonia, Mich

5000 meter champion Tim Broe was not named to the team because he continues to recover from injuries. Third place Jorge Torres achieved the "B" standard and is the only American representative at the 5000 meter distance.

__/ POLE VAULT, YPSILANTI HERITAGE FESTIVAL, SATURDAY ,, The Eastern Michigan Men's and Women's Track and Field teams are hosting the third annual Pole Vault competition at Frog Island Park Saturday, August 16 from Noon to 7:00 pm

__/ SENIOR AGE GROUP RUNNERS FRUSTRATED ,, Bob Daly is frustrated. Jim Forshee is frustrated. Why? Many events use 5 year age group categories through age 59 or age 69, then begin to collapse, eg. 60+; 70+. We agree with Bob and Jim that this practice needs to change. Runners of every age need competitive age groups for their own ages. Since some runners in these age group refuse to run unless their age group is represented in the results, the small additional cost of computing these age groups will be made up by the entry fees.

__/ JULY/AUGUST MICHIGAN RUNNER NOW ON LINE ,, If you missed the July/August issue of the Michigan Runner magazine, now you can find it online. Check out the Top 25 Contributors, Bob Schwartz, Scott Hubbard and Karrie Alexander: http://www.michiganrunner.net/other/ 0703archive.html

__/ GALYAN'S NORTHVILLE SOLSTICE RUN ON COMCAST -Comcast will show the June 21 Galyan's Northville Solstice Run on Channel 20 in Allen Park, Berlin Twp., Brownstown, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Garden City, Gibraltar, Inkster, Grosse Ile, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, Riverview, River Rouge, Rockwood, Southgate, S. Rockwood, Taylor, Trenton and Woodhaven. Doug Kurtis and Jennie McCafferty announce the show, produced by Gary Grace of Comcast. The schedule is Sat, Aug 16 @ 10:30 PM Sun, Aug 17 @ 5:30 PM/10:30 PM/4 AM Wed, Aug 20 @ 9 PM

__/ PART VI: DOUG KURTIS MARATHON TRAINING SERIES: ENDURANCE VS SPEED ,, This week Doug Kurtis talks about the importance of long runs and his own experience building endurance for the 56 mile Comrades ultramarathon in South Africa. Part VI of the twelve part series is sponsored by Running Fit (http://runningfit.com). Doug's training charts are suitable for First Timers, Intermediate, Advanced, and Ace marathoners. http:// michiganrunner.tv/ 2003marathon/.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES ,, Race series events are open to Michigan residents; you do not have to register with the Michigan Runner to participate. Each runner's top 10 results will count at the conclusion of the series. Another way to think about this is that each runner's worst results will be thrown out. Missing one race will not hurt anyone's standings. For results and standings see http:// michiganrunner.net/news/raceseries03_standings.html
