__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"We went out nice and easy, and went through the half-marathon in
about 1:05:40, and started picking people off.
"Our performance was decent, but we gotta keep our eye on the prize,
and go forward. We want to get back to where things used to be in the
1980s. It's a step in the right direction."
-- Brian Sell, 9th, World Championships Marathon, 1st American,
2:13:27, quoted by USATF.
__/ NEW RACE UP NORTH: PETOSKEY'S FESTIVAL ON THE BAY
WELLNESS RUN, AUGUST 20
Petoskey's summer festival is holding a new event as part of the
festival, the Petoskey Festival by the Bay Wellness Walk & Run. The 5K
run and 1 mile run and walk begins a 9:00 am, Saturday, August 20 at
Bayfront Park. Stay at the Festival and take in Mitch Ryder and the
Detroit Wheels, a Shepler's Bay cruise, an inland seas tallship, hot air
baloon rides, a caone challenge across Little Traverse Bay and a Battle
on the Bay band competition. Oh, and there's a beer and wine tent, too.
For more info, contact Michele Sturt, msturt@chartermi.net or visit http://
petoskeyfestival.com.
__/ SE MICHIGAN CLASSIC: BILL'S RUN RICHMOND RUN, AUGUST
20
Richmond's Recreation Department is hosting Bill's Run Richmond Run
at 8:00 am Saturday morning, August 20 in Richmond. The 8K run, 5K
run 5K walk and the 1 mile fun runs begin at Beebe Street Memorial
Park and go through beautiful downtown Richmond. Proceeds benefit
the Richmond Skatepark.
This event in Macomb County is known for doing everything right.

__/ HOW THEY ARE FARED: MICHIGAN ATHLETES AT WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIPS
--Tim Broe, 5000m semi-final, 13:51.17. In a time well short of his
13:11.77 PR, did not advance to final. We did enjoy watching
Australia's Craig Mottram pull ahead of defending world champion Eliud
Kipchoge to take the bronze by .08 seconds. Winner Benjamin Limo
was so excited about winning that he named his new baby boy,
Helsinki.
-- Brian Sell, marathon, 9th, 2:13:27, 1st American and fastest finish
ever by an American in a world championship.
-- Clint Verran, marthon, 22nd, 2:17:42, 2nd American, improved his
39th place finish at the 2003 World Championships.
-- Lauryn Williams, 4 x 100 relay, anchored the US team to win the her
second gold medal of the championships.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD
-- TRAVERSE CITY-- A last minute change of plans took us to the
Grand Traverse Resort and Spa last weekend for the Native American
Cup golf tournament. Bernard Bouschor of the Sault Ste Marie Tribe
credited Olympian gold medalist Billy Mills with inspiring their winning
team:
"Billy Mills never gave up."
Rick Woods, coach of the MHSAA 2003 D4 girls champion cross country
team, Traverse City St. Francis, was a member of the Grand Traverse
Band golf team. Rick said, "Running makes me a better golfer." He
