__/ CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES: EVENTS FOR EVERYONE THIS WEE
KEND
The Crim Festival of Races begins tomorrow in Flint. If you've never
run one of the Crim races, it's not too late to sign up online (http://
crim.org) or in person at the
Crim Sports and Fitness Expo. In addition to the 10 Mile, the Crim
features race-walking,
an 8K run, 5K run, 1 Mile run, and walks of 8K, 5K and 1 Mile. Kids can
run the famous Teddy Bear Trot. Also, you won't want to miss John (The
Penguin)
Bingham's clinic "No Need for Speed" at 3:30 Friday at the Riverfront Ch
aracter Inn.
Expo hours, packet pick-up and late registration:
Thursday, August 26, 4-8pm
Friday, August 27, 11am-9
Saturday, August 28, 6:30 am-Noon
While you are at the expo, stop by the Michigan Runner booth and say
"Hi." Of course, you'll want to catch the great post-
race party on Saturday,
9am-4pm. For the complete schedule, see http://crim.org .
__/ MICHIGAN TRAVEL TV: MUSKEGON'S CHRONICLE SEAWAY
We had a great time running Muskegon's Chronicle Seaway 15K and
visiting Muskegon during the
Summer Celebration. The 15K course is a wonderful tour of Muskegon's
new waterfront.
Celebrate with us on Michigan Travel TV:

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I'm thrilled. It was almost a perfect race for me. Yes, it was hot,
but I felt strong. I'm so sweaty and so happy. When I entered the stadium
, I didn't know if I was in fourth place or third. When I heard the announce
r say third, I burst into tears. I couldn't control myself. With the course and
the history, it's all just wonderful."
-- Olympic marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor
__/ OLYMPIC GAMES: WHAT A WEEK!
We all got choked up watching Deena Kastor run that incredible marath
on Sunday and find out when
she entered the stadium that she was in the position for the bronze
medal -- the first American
woman to medal in the marathon since Joan Benoit. We were also happ
y to see six-
time Crim winner Catherine Ndereba take the silver medal and avenge
her disappointment at being left off the Kenyan team for the games in Sy
dney.
We're also delighted with Detroiter Lauryn Williams silver medal in the
100 meter race. She's
poised, gracious, and fast. Lauryn competed for the University of Miami
until she turned pro after the U.S. Olympic Trials.
And El G, the world'd greatest miler, Hicham El Gerrouj, finally won
gold in the 1500 meter
final yesterday. After falling in Atlanta, and getting beat in Sydney,
he pulled ahead of
Bernard Lagat to win the gold. You can see the race at
http://www.joffroirunning.com/videos.html
Triathlete and medal hopeful Sheila Taormina led the swim, finished the
bike section in
second place, but dropped way back in the run due to a stress fracture.
The 2004 World Champion finished in 23rd place.
Today, we'll be checking the Internet to find out how Tim Broe does in
the 5000 meter semi-final.
Tim is in the second heat, scheduled for 1:00 EDT today. NBC will
carry the race in the 12:30 am to 2:00 am time slot. We're hoping that Ca
nadian Broadcasting will carry the live race this
afternoon. We check results at http://www.athens2004.com. For track
and field results click on "Athletics"
__/ GARY MORGAN IS HAVING FUN IN ATHENS:
1988 Olympian Gary Morgan is in Athens watching the games. Here's hi
s email report:
"I'm having a great time here at the Olympics. Saw the women finish the
Marathon last night. It was super. Also saw the womens 100 meter final.
Great race. Athens has done a super job putting on the olympics. I'm vol
unteering at the Volleyball venue. So many great things to see and not e
nough time. Have to sleep some time. Going to track and field tonight.
Take care
GARY"
