__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"A wild island in the biggest, deepest lake in the universe is a good
place to find yourself when midsummer days scorch everything."
-- Scott Sullivan, Michigan Runner editor, in "Northern Dreams", The
Commercial Record, August 3, 2006, p. A4. Scott will be reporting on
that wild island in Michigan Runner TV's Grand Island Marathon later on
this month.
__/ "LONG BLUE LINE, THE CRIM AT 30" IS HOT OFF THE PRESS -
We stopped by the Crim offices on Thursday last week and found
ourselves in for a
treat. Dorie Barkey, the Crim's Program Coordinator, showed us the
brand-new, 5-minutes-inside-the-Crim-office, coffee-table book: "Long
Blue
Line, the Crim at 30." The Flint Journal has produced a beauty of a
book-- 144 hardcover pages of photos taken by Flint Journal
photographers. We saw photos of posters, medals, personalities,
participants, and
more. We rushed over to the Flint Journal offices only to find that no
one there had seen the finished book yet. We ordered ours and you
can,
too:
Call (810) 766-6179, or
email kharris@flintjournal.com, or
find a printable order form: http://mlive.com/flintjournal/store.
Orders before August 11 are $29.95; after August 11 the price is
$39.95.
__/ RUN THRU HELL, SATURDAY, AUGUST 12 - It's about the T-shirt,
the
scenic course on country roads, the 10 Mile distance at which many test
their fitness for the Crim 10 Mile, but mostly it's about race directors
Dolores and Harrison Hensley who have volunteered more of their time
for Michigan road racing than just about anyone. The 10 mile and 4.8
mile
"weenie" race begin at 8:00 am at Hell Creek Ranch on Cedar Lake
Road
at Paterson Lake Road. Do plan to go early and park in the lot; no
parking on Paterson Lake Road. Register online:
http://gaultracemanagement.com
__/ SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE, SATURDAY, AUGUST 12 - Beautiful
Hines Park
at Nanking Mills in Westland is the site of the 5K run, a 2 Mile walk, a
4 mile inline skate and a 10 mile bike. There will be a bouncy for
kids, a snowcone machine, and dog and strollers are welcome. The
Second
Chance at Life organization raises awareness for the need of organ
donors.
For more information see http://www.secondchanceatlife.org.

__/ SYLVANIA TRIATHLON / DUATHLON, SYLVANIA, OHIO, SUNDAY,
AUGUST 13 -
Now in its 22nd year, the Sylvania triathlon keeps fans happy with a
scenic, flat, fast course. The triathlon is available in Sprint and
Olympic distances; the duathlon is 3kR - 40KB, 10KR or you can put a
team
together for a relay. Location is Tam-O-Shanter Sports Complex,
Olander
Park, Sylvania, Ohio, 7:30 am. Elite Endeavors provides clinics for
those new to multisport events.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD: TRAVERSE CITY- We were in town for one of
Michigan's three major golf tournaments-- the Native American Cup at
Grand
Traverse Resort and Spa. One of the mainstays of host team, the Grand
Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, is Rick Woods. When
he's not
playing golf, Rick coaches the Traverse City St. Francis cross country
team. The girls won in 2003 and were runners-up in Division 4 last
year.
EDMONTON ALBERTA - We're headed to one of the continents' great
venues
for athletic competition. Edmonton, Alberta hosted the 2001 IAAF World
Championships in Athletics and the 2005 World Masters Games. We
plan
to explores Edmonton's famous trail system and to capture the
excitement
of a weekend of running events, including the Canadian Half-Marathon
championship. Marathon, half-marathon and 10K are on Sunday; 5K
and kids
runs are on Saturday. Details are online at
http://events.runningroom.com
Watch for Michigan Runner TV's will cover the 2006 race.
__/ JIM GAVER AND WFUM WILL BROADCAST THE CRIM'S 30TH -
With Jim Gaver
retiring from WFUM, we weren't sure that Michigan Television, the Flint
Public Television Station, would continue the traditional broadcast the
evening of the Crim Festival of Races. We're pleased to report that
Jim Gaver will return for the Crim's 30th anniversary. You can read Jim's
story of the annual broadcast at
http://www.michiganrunner.com/0801/CRIM.html. Also, you can order a
DVD
of the hour-long "Crim, the First 30 Years" at http://www.wfum.org/.
