__/ KELLY WHITE, MODAFINIL AND ME - Kelly White is the US sprinter who's World Championship gold medals in the 100 and 200 meter dashes are in jeopardy since she tested positive for modafinil. I think Kelly White is not a cheater and shouldn't be labeled one. Here's why: Kelly says she took modafinil to combat narcolepsy, a condition which she shares with other members of her family.

I take modafinil to combat narcolepsy, too. Kelly says she wants to live a normal life. So do I. Without modafinil, I can't read, watch a movie, drive more than half an hour, or do anything passive without falling asleep. Both of my parents and all seven of my siblings have degrees of narcolepsy, too. I've fallen asleep in the middle of a conversation, at a Greatful Dead concert, and I've been thrown out of college classes for sleeping.

Modafinil is not a banned substance; it is considered related to banned substances. The New York Times says the Modafinil directions warn athletes. The directions I have (4 pages of fine print) include no such warning.

I think Kelly White is, at worst, guilty of being naive. If she wants to compete in the future, she'll have to choose between the opportunity to compete and having a normal life. That's a tough choice, but she shouldn't be labeled a cheat for wanting to have both.

__/ CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES ON MICHIGAN RUNNER TV - The 27th annual Crim Festival of Races is now showing on Michigan Runner TV. Look for Riley McLincha drubbling in the 10-Mile; catch our interview with Bobby Crim during the 8and5K run segment; enjoy the exhuberance of the Lois Craig Invitational for Special Olympics; and look for yourself if you ran or walked in the 27th annual Crim. http:// michiganrunner.tv/2002crim/ (Not a typo; we've included the 27th Crim on the same page as the 26th.)

__/ PART IX: DOUG KURTIS MARATHON TRAINING SERIES. Take advantage of Doug's experience. Find out his tricks for having a great marathon day. The twelve part series is sponsored by Running Fit (http:// runningfit.com). Doug's training charts are suitable for First Timers, Intermediate, Advanced, and Ace marathoners. http:// michiganrunner.tv/ 2003marathon/.

__/ RACES THIS WEEKEND:

**River Run 5K and Half Marathon, Cleveland, September 6 & 7**

Cleveland is just three hours from southeast Michigan and offers weekend entertainment for the whole family. Take in the River Run half- marathon on Sunday along the Rocky River in one of Cleveland's very scenic metroparks. A 5K and Kids runs are options on Saturday morning. http://www.hermescleveland.com

**Mackinac Island 8 Mile, Saturday September 6**

The island-a Michigan icon with its historic fort, downtown, mansions, and car-less roads roamed by bikes and horses-is a treat any time, especially for this race around its perimeter. Held for 3 3years on tgeh Saturday after Labor Day, it offers breath-taking views of the Mackinac Bridge, Lake Huron, Arch Rock and other favorites. http:// www.gaultracemanagement.com --Scott Sullivan

**Witch's Hat, Saturday September 6**

No, this is not a Halloweek Run; race is named for South Lyon's distinctively-shaped train depot. A fundraiser for the South Lyon Cross Country teams, Veteran stars and alums, Laurel park and Wally Herrala, put this 10K and/or 5K on their schedules each year. Both start at 9:30 am at South Lyon High School. http://www.slxc.com.

**Reeds Lake Triathlon, Saturday, September 6

This 20th-annual favorite features a half-mile swim, 18i-mile bike and five-mile run. The swim course is flat, others less so. Overall winners get $250, runners-up $125 and third place finishers $75. Masters champs receive $50 and are eligible for open prize money too. Starts and ends at John Collins nPark. No race-day registration and field is limited to 800. http://www.eastgr.org or (616) 949-1750.

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK- "We love Flint - This is our second home." -- Andrew Masai of Kenya, who placed second in the Crim Masters category. Masai won the Masters in the previous three times he ran. From the Flint Journal, Sunday, August 24, page A2.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES - STANDINGS-We will be reporting on the Crim Festival of Races 10 Mile and the Cadillac Festival of Races 10K just as soon as we check some residencies.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES - Race series events are open to Michigan residents; you do not have to register with the Michigan Runner to participate. Each runner's top 10 results will count at the conclusion of the series. Another way to think about this is that each runner's worst results will be thrown out. Missing one race will not hurt anyone's standings. For results and standings see http:// michiganrunner.net/news/raceseries03_standings.html
