__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I love Governor Milliken, but I did tell him last year his record was going
down."
-- Governor Jennifer Granholm, quoted by John Fleisher, Associated
Press, in the Detroit Free Press, September 7, 2004.
The record did go down: Governor Granholm ran the Mackinaw Bridge
five miles in 43:44 to better Milliken's time of 46:50.
__/ FIRST GENTLEMAN DAN MULHERN IS TRAINING FOR DETROIT
FREE PRESS/FLAGSTAR BANK MARATHON
Mary Zatina, Dan Mulhern's chief of staff, called us earlier this week with
the news that the First Gentleman is training to run the Detroit Free
Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon On October 24. This will be Mr. Mulhern's
first marathon, although he is not new to the Michigan running scene.
He ran the Memorial Day Mackinaw Bridge Run as well as the Labor
Day Bridge Run, which his training partner, Governor Jennifer
Granholm, ran in the governor's record time of 44:43. Next up for First
Gentleman Mulhern is the Capital City River Run on September 26 in
Lansing.
__/ NUMBERS ARE UP FOR DETROIT FREE PRESS/FLAGSTAR
BANK MARATHON
DETROIT (September 8, 2004) - Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank
Marathon officials
announced Wednesday that over 6,600 runners have entered the 27th
annual event,
scheduled for Sunday, October 24, making it the largest field of entrants
in
event history. Last year's event attracted 6,478; in 2002 entries totaled
5,104.
With less than seven weeks to go, officials believe total participant
numbers
may reach as high as 8,000.
The Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon is comprised of four
running
events including the St. John Health 5K Fun Run and Fitness Walk, the
Reebok
Five Person Marathon Relays, the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank
Marathon
and, new this year - the International Half Marathon.
"The addition of the international half marathon has really created a lot
of
excitement and enthusiasm and has boosted our numbers to record
levels" said
marathon race director Patricia (Ball) Dlugokinski.
Dlugokinski continued, "We expect to reach our capacity of 2,500 in the
half
marathon and 400 teams for the 5-person Reebok Relays within the
next week
or two. We encourage all runners interested in these two events to
register
quickly before it's too late". Registration for all events can be done
online at http://www.detroitfreepressmarathon.com or by requesting an
entry
form by calling 313-222-6676 or email at marathon@freepress.com.
__/ ED WHITLOCK HOPES TO BETTER HIS OWN RECORD AT
SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON.
Milton, Ontario's Ed Whitlock is a regular at the Crim Festival of Races
10
Mile (1:02:28 in 2003) and set one of two world age-group records at the
2003
Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
(TORONTO [6th September 2004) - Ed Whitlock, the idefatigable
Canadian running
phenomenon, confirmed today that he is ready to take a run at the
remarkable
world record he set last Fall on the Toronto Waterfront, when he became
the
first marathoner on the planet, over 70, to go under 3 hours, with a
2:59:10
clocking. He will attempt to do so again on the same course, Canada's
flattest,
fastest marathon, the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront, on September
26th.
And this year, the usually overly-modest and soft-spoken
septuagenarian from
Milton, Ontario, says "watch out", he is in much better shape than last
September!
Many will remember the wild scenes of celebration as the 72-year-old
Whitlock
crossed the line last year-his face cut and bruised from a fall on his way
to the grocery store earlier that week; his body completely spent and
leaning
to the left as he lurched down the home-straight with the crowd on its
feet,
the seconds ticking away.
When he crossed the line, his feeling was of joy, but also of relief; "I felt
great relief at doing it, finally. That time was never in the bag until I
crossed the finish line. I think this Fall was my last realistic shot at it."
Whitlock already held the world record as the oldest man to break the 3-
hour
barrier, which he did at age 69 years, 237 days, at the Columbus
Marathon on
29 October 2000. That day, he ran an amazing 2:52:47. After that,
Whitlock
continued to re-write the record books. He now holds the official world
records for 70+ for both 5000m [18 minutes 33.38 seconds] and
10000m [38:04.13].
-- From a Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Press Release.
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - RYAN SHAY WINS USATF 20K TITLE
Joe Shay was the first to let us know that Ryan Shay won the U.S.A
Track &
Field 20K National Championship in New Haven on Labor Day. Joe is
Ryan's
father and high school coach at Central Lake.
Ryan Lamppa's Running USA Wire says, "He (Shay) motored the last
two miles at
4:42 pace to finish in 59:53, holding off the chase by (Chris) Graff, who
had bested him at the Olympic Trials 10,000. As a USA Championship,
the New
Haven 20K is also part of the 2004 USA Running Circuit (USARC), a
USA Track
& Field road series. With his victory, Shay, the defending men's USARC
Grand Prix champion, earned 15 points to move into second place in
the
standings behind training partner Keflezighi, 54 points to 52. The next
men's
USARC race is the CVS/pharmacy Downtown 5K on Sept. 12 in
Providence, R.I."
__/ MICHIGAN HIGH SCHOOL RUNNERS OF THE YEAR: 2000/01 -
2003/04
Last week we announced the Michigan High School Runners of the
Year 2003-2004:
the Saline-Spirit of Pre Relay Team of Dustin Voss, Carter Bishop, Neil
Atzinger,
Alex Muhs and Paul Dapkus. Jeff Hollobaugh writes about the team's
state and
national titles in the 4 x 800 and distance medley relays in the
September/
October 2004 Michigan Runner.
Dathan Ritzenhein inspired Michigan Runner magazine's first award in
2001. Ritz,
of course, won the Footlocker Cross Country Championship in both
1999 and 2000 and
dominated national high school track at the 2 mile distance.
2002's choice was an easy one as Tim Moore kept the Footlock Cross
Country
Championship in Michigan. That year we also recognized other
outstanding performers
with honorable mentions: Nicki Bonsack, Nicole Bush, Candice Davis,
Katie Erdman,
Kenneth Ferguson, Krishawna Parker, Tim Ross, and Amber Smith.
Michigan Runner Editor
Scott Sullivan and I also defined our criteria: "Each of the athletes is a
state
champion in cross country or outdoore track and field. In addition, each
set a
state record in at least one event or achieved significant success at a
national
championship event."
Ishpeming's Amber Smith got the 2003 nod for her 5th place at
Footlocker and her
sweep of UP Division events in middle and long distance track. Nicki
Bohnsack,
Nicole Bush and Candice Davis were recognized with honorable
mentions for the
second year, while Chris Catton, Dustin Voss and Liam Boylan-Pett
were also
named to the honorable mention list.
2004's honorable mentions are Nicole Bush, Amber Smith, Stephan
Shay, Justin Switzer,
Neal Naughton, Bekah Smeltzer, Liam Boylan Pett, Geena Gall, Josh
Perrin and
Dan Roberts.
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD

next year. Michigan Runner TV will feature the Run for the Riffs and the
