__/ JOHN ROGUCKI MEMORIAL KENSINGTON CHALLENGE, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17

-- Kensington Metro Park is one of Michigan's spectacular places to chill, ride bikes, swim, golf, train for a marathon, do some hill work and race. A visit will have you planning your return. This weekend, the John Rogucki Memorial Challenge gets runners in to the 15K run, 5K run or walk and kids' runs, knowing that they'll want to return both to the race and to the Park. http://aatrackclub.org

__/ MT BALDHEAD CHALLENGE, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 -

Visiting the Saugatuck and Douglas area is reason enough to sign up for either the 15K, the certified 5K or the kids run, but the race is offering a special incentive this year: "After six straight victories, we're putting up a challenge to anyone who wins the race and beats Matt Smith's 15K course record of 51:03. If you do, we'll donate $500 to your favorite 501c3 charity. Women? We'll do the same for you - if you can win the race and break Andrea Hutchin's 15K course record of 1:01:49." Keep in mind that the challenge includes the 200+ steps up the Mt. Baldhead sand dune.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: 2005 CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES - You know it's a festival when it takes eight individual shows to capture the Crim spirit. We especially liked watching Bobby Crim reminisce about the first Bobby Crim Road Race in 1977 in "Crim Hall of Fame and Museum with Bobby Crim", watching Michelle "the cat woman" Dvorak lead the dancing in the "Flint Journal Post Race Party, and watching the irresistible Teddy Bear Trotters. http://michiganrunner.tv/2005crim/ and http://crim.org.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: 2005 MILFORD LABOR DAY 30K & 10K -- Milford's Labor Day 30K has become a staple of the Fall marathon season. This year a new 10K was added to the day's events. See why this race on the beautiful Milford course has become a favorite of Michigan runners.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - PARK CITY, UTAH - Mountain Trails Foundation Executive Director Carol Potter knew she had a winner in last weekend's first Mid-Mountain Marathon. "Everyone will love the trails," she said. She was right, we did love the trails, and the picturesque former mining town of Park City, and the Olympic Park, and the restaurants. . .

Video will be available later on this week. In the meantime, add Park City and the Mid-Mountain Marathon to your "must-do list.

__/ HOUSTON APPRECIATES TEE SHIRT DRIVE FOR KATRINA EVACUAEES

Our colleague at Inside Texas Running, Lance Phegley, sent along his thanks:"Wanted to pass along a write-up from yesterday's Houston Chronicle about the clothing drive efforts for the hurricane evacuees. I would like to thank all of you for the assistance that you have provided for this effort.

Every day, I have to go down to the parking lot of our building when the UPS and USPS delivery person arrives. They start dumping huge boxes out of the back of their truck and we sort through them. Each day a volunteer comes by and picks up the donations and takes them to the evacuees. We are keeping a list of all the companies and events that have donated and will thank all of them in an upcoming issue of ITR (unfortunately, we will be unable to thank the individual runners who have sent in clothing donations - there are simply too many to list). Thanks again for everyone's help!"

"Runners give shirts off their backs Drive suits to a T those who want to extend helping hand to Katrina victims

By ROBERTA MACINNIS Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

Lance Phegley knew how to help after Hurricane Katrina. The publisher of Inside Texas Running and Runner Triathlete News posted a plea for race T-shirts on the magazines' Web sites.

The response, as with other relief efforts, has been overwhelming. Roughly 10,000-15,000 shirts later, Phegley is still hearing from race directors, runners, cyclists and other athletes who are donating to the cause.

'I do have a list of everyone that we've spoken to (and) exchanged e-mails with that are sending items. It pretty much fills up a legal pad,' Phegley said.

Phegley said he had collected 30 to 40 boxes of T-shirts in his office on the first couple of days, and that didn't include the larger donations that were being sent directly to the Salvation Army, such as the

2,000 shirts the New York Road Runners Club is contributing. Phegley said donations were coming from near (the Houston Striders running club) and far (Vancouver International Marathon). 'We did a similar thing, on a smaller scale, when (Tropical Storm Allison) flooded much of northwest Houston," Phegley said. "They were much appreciated then, and I'm sure that they will be this time, too.'"

__/ USOC NAMES FORMER DETROITER, LAURYN WILLIAMS, ATHLETE OF THE MONTH INDIANAPOLIS - The U.S. Olympic Committee has named sprinters Lauryn Williams and Justin Gatlin as its August Athletes of the Month.Williams (Miami, Fla.), the 2004 Olympic 100m silver medalist, won the gold medal in the 100m, the first women's medal for Team USA at the 2005 World Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Williams burst out of the blocks despite a rain-soaked track and grabbed an early lead before winning the race in 10.93 seconds. Williams defeated 2004 Olympic 200m gold medalist and 100m bronze medalist Veronica Campbell of Jamaica, who finished second in 10.95.
