This year's events also include a 5K, a kids' run and the adventure triathlon (5KR, 12MB, 2M Ka yak). Events begin at 9:00 am on Labor Day. Call (231) 775- 4272 for more information.

Governor's Labor Day Bridge Run, Mackinaw City, Monday, September 6

Runner (and governor) Jennifer Granholm is the inspiration behind the first ever Governor's Labor Day Bridge Run. Entry was determined by lottery earlier, so you'll need to plan for 2005 if you don't already have a confir med entry. We hope this run in conjunction with the traditional Labor Da y Bridge Walk is a success and continues in future years.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD -

- FLINT - CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES - At our Michigan Runner booth w e enjoyed meeting lots of readers and subscribers. Among those who st opped by were Bobby Crim, who founded the original Bobby Crim Road Race in 1977. Bobby Crim told us his goal wa s to be in the top three in his age group for the 10 Mile. We congratulate him on meeting that goal with a 1:25:04 and that third place finish in the 70-74 age group.

Denisa Costescu and her husband Ovidiu Oteanu also stopped by-- excited to be running the Crim 10 Mile for the first time. Denisa has had a great season, winning 17 of the 20 races she entered. She goes for th e prize money races, so she's winning races with significant competition. She was especially proud of her two state one day double: she won one race in Ohio, drove 4 hours to West Virgin ia and won a second race on the same day. Since Art McCafferty and I were out on the Crim course with our video cameras during the Crim races, I decided to run my own version of the 1 0 Mile Friday morning. Following the blue line made it easy and memori es supplied the missing crowds.

Actually, I wasn't completely by myself; Insport rep Judy Santoni also ran the Crim course on Friday morning. We're always glad to see wheeler Ji mbo Boyd return to Flint from his current home in Atlanta. Jimbo makes it back to race the Crim 10 mile every year. Anytime I'm tempted to think th e hills are tough, I try to recall the much more difficult climb that Jimbo an d the other wheeler's have-- especially on wet roads.

__/ BOB FIGULI TO ENTER UPPER PENINSULA SPORTS HALL OF FA ME

Bob Figuli of Bessemer & Marquette wrote us with good news this week: the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame selected Bob to be a member of the 2005 class. According to Dennis Grall's article in the Escanaba Daily Press, August 21, 2004, "He has run more than 102,000 miles, more than four times ar ound the world, since he started in 1970. He has completed more than 750 road, trail and snowshoe races, 84 marathons and 70 ultra- marathons and has run around Lake Superior." Bob credits the November 2003 Michigan Runner cove r story with helping him get elected.

The induction banquet at the Premiere Center in Iron Mountain will be May 21, 2005. Other inductees will include Larry Tiziani, Ironwood, golf; Bob Jurasin, Bessemer, football; Rom Gilbert, Wakefield, all- around athlete; Bill Gappy, Houghton, basketball coach; Lowell Johnson, Negaunee, basketball; Ray Mariucci, Iron Mountain, wrestling; Rick Olds, Iron Mountain, basketball, track and hockey coach; Wil Rasm ussen, Negaunee, skiing; Bill Santilli, Crystal Falls, Football.

__/ OLYMPIC ATHLETES COMPETE IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM FRIDAY

The first post Olympic track meet will be in Brussels, Belgium Friday. __/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"It was fun out there. We were doing a lot of racing. They seemed to be faster than me on the downhills, and then I'd be stronger on the uphills."
