__/ ADRIAN'S AMY DODSON REIGNS SUPREME FOR CHALLENGED FEMALES-Amy Dodson holds marathon (3:53:21) and half-marathon (1:51:06) records for amputees and has turned her talents to the triathlon. She took first place in the challenged female division at the Ford New York City Triathlon held on July 10, posting an overall time of 2:51:45. The Olympic distance event was comprised of a 1500 meter swim in the Hudson River, a 25 mile bike trek from Manhattan through the Bronx and Yonkers and back to Central Park in Manhattan, and finally a 10 K Run in Central Park.

For more on Amy's feat see http://www.michiganrunner.net/news/ amy_dodson0905.html. You can also see Michigan Runner's feature on Amy: http://www.michiganrunner.net/features/amy_dodson0303.html

__/ OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST HAYES JONES RUNNING FOR MICHIGAN HOUSE-Former Eastern Michigan track and field coach Bob Parks sent us this news about Hayes Jones:

"Hayes Jones, our 1960 Olympic Bronze and 1964 Gold Medalist for the USA in the 110m HH, has announced that he is seeking the Democratic nomination in 2006 for the 29th District seat in the Michigan House of Representatives. The seat represents Pontiac and Auburn Hills and the incumbent cannot seek re-election due to term limitations. Jones, a 67 year old Pontiac resident, was appointed in January as director of Oakland County's Economic Development & Community Affairs division. He also serves on the state Technology Tri-Corridor Steering Committee. Jones, a former Pontiac schools trustee, won the Gold Medal 41 years ago in Tokyo."

__/ HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS PARTICIPATION BREAKS 7 MILLION MARK - "The number of participants in high school athletics increased for the 16th consecutive year in 2004-05 and topped 7 million for the first time in history. Participation rose by 115,157 students, to 7,018,709, according to the 2004-05 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The survey also determined that nearly 53% of students enrolled in high schools participate in athletics.

The girls participation total of 2,908,390 set an all-time record. The boys total also increased, reaching 4,110,319, the highest participation in 27 years. This year's boy's participation figure is second only to the record 4,367,442 in 1977-78.

Basketball remained the most popular sport for girls with 456,543 participants, followed by outdoor track and field (428,198), volleyball (386,022), fast pitch softball (364,759), soccer (316,104), cross country (170,450), tennis (169,292), swimming and diving (148,154), competitive spirit squads (84,416) and golf (64,245).

The complete 2004-05 Participation Survey will be available soon on the NFHS Web site http://www.nfhs.org."
