__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"What a run! I was the penultimate ultra runner (that means I came in
next to last). The course was downright mean in places. I stepped into
some muck and sank clear to my chin. I'm scratched, bruised, sore,
chaffed, sun-burnt and on the verge of losing my right toe-nail which had
finally grown back after last year's run.
Along the way I came to the conclusion that, indeed, last year's course
was sissified, and this year's course was righteous. I'll be back next year
with a tad more respect for your course."
--Dave Swenson, Ames, IA, 50 Mile finisher, Dances with Dirt 2004
__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK (NON-RUNNING)
"That's because I eat properly: red meat and gin."
-- Julia Child, when asked by NPR radio host Diane Rehm why she had
so much energy.
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: CAPITAL CITY RIVER RUN
Michigan Runner TV cameras show why the Capital City River Run
continues to grow in popularity. The scenic 10 Mile and 5K courses
along the Grand and Red Cedar Rivers, terrific long-sleeved shirts, kids
races and top-notch organization are among the reasons. Races begin
and end at 9:30 am Sunday, September 26 at the Impressions 5
Science Center in downtown Lansing. First gentleman Dan Mulhern will
be among those running the 10 mile as a fall marathonn tune-up.

__/ SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON, SUNDAY,
SEPTEMBER 26 - You
can try the half-marathon or the 5K in addition to the marathon in this
event which garnered many kudos and two world-records in it's first
running last year. Among the prizes offered is a $5000 prize for the
"Neighbourhood Challenge" awarded to the neighborhood with the
best entertainment and crowd support. If you go, wave to the Michigan
Runner cameras.

__/ SILVER VALLEY TRAIL RUN, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 - The 7
mile run through the Huron National Forest is a treat, ande so is the city
of Tawas on the shores of Lake Huron. This race is known for it's
beautiful course, keeper T-shirts, post-race prizes and friendly
organization. For more information, see http://www.tawas.info.
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD, LEELANAW PENINSULA
The Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association surely does know how to
throw a party. Beginning with the Harvest Stompede packet pick-up on
Friday night, we could sample wine, feast on shrimp, salad, pizza and
dessert. Michigan Runner editor Scott Sullivan and I next headed to
the race start among the spectacular scenery of the Ciccone Vineyards
Saturday morning where a pre-race spread greeted more than 700
runners and their accompanying supporters. That's right,
a pre-race spread of fruit, cookies, bagels, coffee and pastries. The
5K and 7 mile races themselves are an incomparable feast for the eyes.
The really hilly race courses did require that we refuel after the races,
and so we did. The post-race party continued with the Harvest
Stompede winery tour-- a progressive pasta and wine dinner to each of
the eleven participating wineries. We congratulate race director Nate
Rouse, vintner Tony Ciccone, and Leelanau Peninsula Vintners
Association's Rick Coates for a spectacular event.
Michigan Runner TV is showing the 5K Stinger now; the 7 Mile
Grapebuster and the Wine Tour shows will be on later
this week: http://michiganrunner.tv/2004harvest/.
__/ HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: WATCH OUT FOR THE
CLARKSTON GIRLS
The nationally ranked Clarkston High School girls cross country team
showed their stuff at the Spartan Invitational last Friday. The top five
(Jenny Morgan 18:05, Liz Mengyan 18:14, Anne Oltman 19:05, Lyndsay
Smith 19:12, and Gillian Nordquist 19:52) placed 1,2,9,11, and 23
to win over powerhouses Goodrich, Rockford and Traverse City Central.
Meanwhile, the "B" team including three freshmen had a strong showing
at the Holly Invitational.

--BRIAN SELL, CLINT VERRAN GEAR UP FOR CHICAGO AT
PHILADELPHIA DISTANCE RUN
Brian Sell and Clint Verran crossed the finish line together at last
Sunday's Jefferson Hospital Philadelphia Distance Run half marathon,
finishing 8th and 9th in 1:04:00. The two also finished together at the
Walt Disney World Half Marathon in January. Sell and Verran, both
members of the Hanson-Brooks Distance Project, are among the elite

10. Hanson-Brooks teammate Trent Briney is also scheduled to run
