Huron National Forest, plus a chance to hang out in East Lawas and
Lake Huron. Everyone has a chance to win one of four random cash
prizes. Call (800) 55-TAWAS.
__/ CAPITAL CITY RIVER RUN, LANSING, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 -
Family-friendly fun starts and ends at Impression 5 Science Center, a
hands-on museum with displays and events for children of all ages.
Smile Mile Kids Run (ages 12 and under) starts at 9:30 a.m., quarter-
mile Slime Dash (ages seven and under) at 9:40, 10 mile run at 10, and
5K at 10:10, all on shores of the Grand and Red Cedar rivers. 10 mile is
the Wild Card in the Michigan Runner Race Series. Museum is three
blocks east of the Capitol, just south of Michigan Avenue on Museum
Drive. http://www.ccriverrun.org or (517) 332.2681.
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD: CLEVELAND, COPPER HARBOR AND
POINTS BETWEEN - Michigan Runner publisher Art McCafferty and I
have been thraveling to races in Michigan and since Crim weekend in
August. Along the way we found old friends and made some new ones
as we collect video for Michigan Runner TV shows:
--CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES
FLINT (8/22-23) - We enjoyed meeting Anastasia Ndereba, Catherine
Ndereba's younger sister who is having fun on her first US road racing
circuit. Anastasia's outgoing personality, sense of humor and beautiful
English earned her the role of tour guide for a group of fellow Kenyans.
She finished in ninth place with 55:06.
--BAY MILLS CASINO AND RESORT
BRIMLEY (8/23-24) - The occasion was the Bay Mills Open golf
tournament on the Canadian Tour, but we found a spectacular trail for
running just off Lakeshore Drive between Brimley and the Point Iroquois
Light. Look for the Mission Hill Overlook; the trail follows the ridge West
through the Hiawatha National Forest.
--CELEBRATE WESTLAKE
WESTLAKE, OHIO (8/30) - We combined a visit to the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame with the CelebrateWestlake 5 mile, much of which runs
through the Cleveland Metropark's beautiful Bradley Woods. Former
Michiganders Lisa Veneziano and Jay Owen were up from Cincinnati,
on their way to a Michigan visit. Lisa is currently leading "Run Ohio's"
Grand Prix series. We also saw Jim Jurcevich cooling down after his
third place finish with Henry Dennis. Dennis was tuning up forhis
surprise win at the USA Men's 5K championship on September 7.
--RIVER RUN HALF MARATHON AND 5K
CLEVELAND, OHIO (9/6-7) - Fred and Bob Cruse travel to many races
around Michigan so we weren't surprised to see them at the River Run.
Fred tried the 5K on Saturday and Bob took on Sunday's half marathon
which began at Wallace Lake in Berea then ollowed the Rocky River
toward Lake Erie.We were enchanted by the shaded and dramatic
setting of both race courses. You'll be able to check out the setting on an
upcoming Michigan Runner TV show. We took in both Cedar Point and
the ferry to Putin Bay on this trip.
--HARVEST STOMPEDE
SUTTONS BAY (9/14) - The Leelanau Peninsula Vineyards hosted the
Harvest Stompede 7 mile or 5K through the vineyards. The courses are
tough, but the scenery and the wine-tasting afterattracted runners and
walkers from Marquette, Rogers City, Flushing and elsewhere. Dorothy
French and Bonnie Arlt rounded up a dozen friends to spend the
weekend in and around the Leelanau vineyards. Look for a future
Michigan Runner TV show on this unique event.
--LAKE SUPERIOR SHORE RUN RACE AGAINST TOBACCO
MARQUETTE (9/20) - The fall color season was just beginning as we
drove through Houghton, Hancock Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor
before heading on to Ishpeming and Marquette. In Marquette, we met
Bob Figuli at Little Presque Isle park, the site of the Lake Superior Shore
Run half marathon and 5K. In a future Michigan Runner TV show, Bob
will recount some of the highlights of the 100,000miles he has run.
Later on that day, we met Michigan High School Runner of the Year
Amber Smith in her hometown of Ishpeming, just after her cross country
victories at the Spartan Invitational on Friday and Stephenson on
Saturday. Amber is scheduling college visits with some of the top
Division I schools; in addition to her running talent, Amber brings a 4.0
to the table. Our interview with Amber will also appear among this Fall's
Michigan Runner TV shows. Finally, you'll be able to catch some of the
spectacular scenery of the Lake Superior Shore Run half marathon and
5K.
__/ STANDARD FEDERAL BANK 10K SERIES - AUBURN HILLS
FINALE - Boaz will be Boaz. Meaning other "boyz" who'd hoped to beat
Kenyan-cum-Michiganian Boaz Cheboiywo Sept. 13 were out of luck.
Cheboiywo completed a four-race sweep of the second-annual
Standard Federal 10K series, winning the Auburn Hills finale with a
best-ever road time of 29:05. He collected $1,500 ($500 for this race, a
grand for the series) for his work.
Cheboiywo, an NCAA 10,000-meter track and cross-country champion
at Eastern Michigan University, held off challenges from Team Hansons
in all four races. He prevailed June 28 in Lansing (29:39), July 19 in
Grand Rapids (29:30), Aug. 16 in Kalamazoo (29:54) before Auburn
Hills.
Romanian Olympic-hopeful Denisa Costescu (training this summer in
Michigan) was women's winner in this Detroit superb, crossing in 35:10.
It was Costescu's third S.F. win in as many efforts. Seana Larson, 33, of
Dexter -- who claimed the Lansing race -- settled for her third-straight
second in 35:45.
Mike Scannell, 41, of Grand Blanc, and Laura Murphy, 40, of Ann Arbor,
were masters champs. Scannell, also over-40 winner in Lansing and
G.R., crossed in 32:20; Murphy in 37:26.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES - SCHEDULE - Race series
events are open to Michigan residents; you do not have to register with
the Michigan Runner to participate. Each runner's top 10 results will
count at the conclusion of the series. Another way to think about this is
that each runner's worst results will be thrown out. Missing one race will
not hurt anyone's standings. For results and standings see http://
michiganrunner.net/news/raceseries03_standings.html
