__/ MICHIGAN RUNNING COMMUNITY STEPS UP AFTER KATRINA -
We heard from many people after last week's message (http://
www.michiganrunner.net/news/9-2-05-katrina.html) about ways to help
Katrina evacuees. Drives and donations were being organized by
Fifth Third River Bank Run, Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon,
Running Fit and many more.
The Crim Festival of Races is holding a 5K Run and Walk for Gulf Coast
Relief, Tuesday, September 16, 6:00 pm. No registration fee, just your
monetary donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Donations will be collected starting at 5:00 pm at the Crim Office on First
Street, across from the Festival Lot. The Run & Walk will start on the
corner of First and Harrison Streets and follow the beautiful Flint
River Trail to Hamilton Avenue and back to downtown. This will be an
untimed run and walk; however there will be a clock available so you
can check your individual time. Questions? Call Crim office at (810)
235-3396.
American Red Cross needs money to, among other things, support
airfare for volunteers being deployed to the shelters in Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and other states.
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: 2005 CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES - More
video of the 29th Crim Festival of Races is online. The 8 & 5K Run and
Walk is especially interesting as we watch the expressions of runners
from the 10 Mile, 8K and 5K as they cross the finish line. The Standard
Federal Bank Sports and Fitness Expo features Sherlynn Everly's
Women and Running as well as the Michigan Runner of the Year
awards. http://crim.org or http://michiganrunner.tv/2005crim/
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - MILFORD - A few years ago, when Doug
Klingensmith saw an article about the dearth of 25K and 30K races, he
was inspired to start one. Last Saturday, the Labor Day 30K celebrated
its 5th anniversary. Runners from Southeast Michigan, Grand Rapids,
Lansing, Holland, Flint, and Windsor, Ontario took on the rolling hills
and varied scenery of the course on a picture-perfect day for racing. We
congratulate Doug, his wife Tiffany, and members of the Huron Valley
Running Club for adding this distance to our Michigan racing calendar.
Michigan Runner TV will feature the Labor Day 30K and the new 10K
later on this week.
__/ FREE CONCERT ANOTHER REASON TO RUN SCOTIABANK
TORONTO WATERFRONT
MARATHON - Music featuring Lighthouse (Classic Canadian Rock)
and David Rudder (calypso) will be free to all, under the stars, at the
Waterfront Marathon Charity Concert at Harbourfront Center, Friday,
September 23, 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. This should be a terrific opportunity
to experience Toronto's rich cultural diversity. And while you are
thinking about it, book your room now; good rooms are still available at
the Intercontinental, Royal York, Strathcona, Sheraton Centre, Sheraton
4 points, Admiral Radisson and Days Inn. .?Details at: http://

__/ RUNNING USA AND ACTIVE SPORTS TECHNOLOGIES LAUNCH
ONLINE RUNNER RANKING - San Diego - (September 7, 2005) -
Active Sports Technologies has joined forces with Running USA, to
launch a national online runner ranking system. The 'Runner Rankings,'
available at www.RunningUSA.org or www.active.com/rankings, provide
a comprehensive, searchable database of personal road race
performances for runners of all ages and abilities. For details see http://
www.runningnetwork.com/news/runningusaActive05ranking.html
-(Editor's note: Brian Sell is ranked among the top 5. As an example,
you can enter Brian's name, you can see the list of his races since
February 2004--complete with Age Grade percentages.)
__/ MORE RACES THIS WEEKEND THAN ANY OTHER
MACKINAC ISLAND 8 MILE ROAD RACE - Saturday marks the 35th
anniversary of this Michigan classic. More than 2000 runners and
walkers will take off from Mission Point Resort to follow the Island's
perimeter. In addition to the spectacular scenery of the race itself, the
comraderie of runners taking over the Island is part of the experience.
The first wave goes off at 9:30 am and the kids get their turn on the lawn
in front of Mission Point Resort. Register online at http://
runmackinac.com.
WITCH'S HAT RUN - Halloween has nothing to do with it. South Lyon's
original train depot was designed in the "Witch's Hat" style and is now
the home of the South Lyon Historical Society. These 10K, 5K and kids
races are put on by the South Lyon cross country team on Saturday,
September 10. Kids races at 8:30 am are a special treat as the members
of the cross country team run with the kids. The 10K run and 5K run,
walk and competitive walk begin at 9:30 am. For more information see
http://www.slxc.com/witch.html. You can see the "witch's hat" at
http://user.mc.net/~louisvw/depot/s-lyon/s-lyon.htm.
CLEVELAND CLINIC SPORTS HEALTH RIVER RUN - There are lots of
reason to visit Cleveland and one of our favorites is this point-to-point
half marathon which takes place in Cleveland's gorgeous Metropark
along the Rocky River. The half marathon, in-line skate and half-
marathon relay take place on Sunday, September 11. The kids' run and
5K are the day before. For more information see http://
hermescleveland.com/River_Run/. You can check out the course at
http://michiganrunner.tv/2004clevelandclinic/.
DANCES WITH DIRT - You can still get in on the 50K or 50 mile ultras,
but it's way too late to get in on this very popular 100 mile relay put
on by the slightly mad folks at Running Fit. Events begin in Hell,
Michigan at 6:00 am on Saturday, September 10. If you want to get in on
the relay next year, begin planning now and be sure to believe this
Website description "Welcome to the dark side of running. Weak, wimpy,
treadmill running pansies who are afraid to get some dirt in their shorts
need not apply.
Expect to be scratched, muddied and bruised by the beauty of this
unpolished gem. Expect to get out near the edge where life is full color.
Expect a day that leaves you knowing you are fully alive, awake and
crankin' on all cylinders. Expect insanity, stupidity and nirvana."
Info for all participants is at http://danceswithdirt.com.
RUN DRUGS OUT OF TOWN - The Livingston County Community
Alliance in conjunction with the national organization called "Run Drugs
Out of Town" is holding its 5K Run / Walk and Kids run in Howell on the
popular Howell Melon Run course. Events are on Saturday, September
10 with the kids run beginning at 9:00 am and the 5K Run Walk
beginning at 9:30 am.
This is a terrific one for kids: the first 200 kids to register are free
and kids' entertainment follows. Registration is at Howell City Park,
Thompson and Barnard Streets. Call Julie at (517) 545-5944 for more
information.
MID MOUNTAIN MARATHON - We're excited about heading out to Park
City, Utah to video the inaugural Mid-Mountain Marathon which is being
put on by the Mountain Trails Foundation, Saturday, September 10.
Former Michigander and Foundation Executive Director, Carol Potter,
conceived of the marathon. The Foundation manages and operates the
Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail, under contract with Utah State Parks.
The marathon will give runners a chance to see most of the 28 miles of
trails.

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES ON THE ROADS
The 20K National Championship in New Haven has been a great
Michigan story for several years now: 2002: Kyle Baker' 2nd (59:21),
2003: Brian Sell's breakthrough 2nd (59:17), 2004: Ryan Shay's win
(59:53). This year, Abdi Abdirahman rained on Shay's parade with a
new national record (58:42), but Shay's 1:00:34 was good for 2nd and
$5,000. Former Rockford runner, Jason Hartman finished third; Kyle
Baker, 5th, former Hansons runner Nick Cordes, 6th, and Hansons'
Jacob Frey finished in 10th .
Former Hansons' runner Leigh Daniel finished 8h in the women's race
(1:13:29) and Hansons' Dot McMahan was right behinbg in 10th
(1:13:31).
