SOUTHFIELD (6/26/04) - Team captains for the Midwest Corporate
Athletic Association's Corporate Cup Relays chose to move the event to
Southfield High School this year. The school's girls track coach, Calvin
Johnson, was named new meet coordinator. The day's fun began with a 10K road race, followed by a 5K run/walk
across school grounds and through the surrounding neighborhood.
General Motors dominated the road events and established a large
points lead over the other Division I teams. In Division II, Autoliv seized
the lead over Bridgewater Interiors, or BWI (formerly Johnson Controls).
The field events combined high and long jumps with team shot put.
Daimler Chrysler won both in Division I. Autoliv claimed the Division II
shot put, extending its lead over BWI.
At noon, teams began the relays, which varied from short sprints to
middle distances, on the track. Age and gender requirements made for
diverse team membership - and for strategizing by captains.
Daimler Chrysler took the executive relay honors. GM fought off Ford to
the wire for the women's relay crown.
At the halfway point, team photos were taken and everyone cheered the
Michigan Special Olympics kids in their 100-meter dash. Teams raised
more than $5,700 for these Olympians and the Michigan Humane
Society, which had puppies on hand to pet and enjoy as well.
When racing resumed, GM maintained its Division I lead to win with 271
team points. Daimler Chrysler scored 226, while Ford (195) edged
Visteon for third. BWI and Autoliv tied for Division II honors with 105
points each.
