Fabiano Joseph and Alevtina Ivanova Win 29th Crim 10 Mile

FLINT, MICHIGAN - Tanzanian Fabiano Joseph and Russian Alevtina Ivanova are the top male and female finishers in the 29th Annual Crim 10-Mile Race. Fabiano and Ivanova each won a $5,000 share of the Crim's $42,550 purse. At the 8:00 start the skies were cloudy with a temperature of 70 degrees and 90% humidity.

Running in his first Crim, Joseph, 19, won with a time of 47:46. He moved into the lead at the five mile mark.Joseph said, "It was fun to run with some of the runners I train with. At the five mile mark I just took off.." At the six mile mark Joseph had a five second lead, and stretched his lead to nine seconds by the eight mile mark. He finished strong and was alone as he came around the corner, onto the red bricks and sprinted under the arches in downtown Flint to the finish line. A group of 30 runners led the race for the first two miles. By the three-mile mark the lead group was down to 15 runners. Eleven runners carried the pace into the Bradley Street hills before Joseph pulled ahead. He commented, "The course was very tough, but I had a good race." Last year's Crim winner, Kenyan Linus Maiyo finished second, with a time of 47:57, and fellow Kenyan Julius Kibet Koskei finished third at 48:13.

Alevtina Ivanova, 30, running in her second Crim (finished 8th in 2003) pulled ahead at the seven-mile mark to win with a time of 53:34. Ivanova said, "Early in the race I kept my pace, after six miles I knew I could catch the leader if I just ran faster and faster. It was a bit humid, but it was cool. It was a very good race , but it was a little hard to keep pace." Romanian, Luminita Talpos, 32, finished second with a time of 54:41, and Kenyan Grace Momanyl, 23, finished third at 55:12.

Among the Masters runners, Paul Aufdemberg, 40, of Redford, MI, won with a time of 52:21. David Watkins, 44, of Birmingham, MI finished second with a time of 58:23 and Chris Glowacki, 50, of Freeland, MI finished third at 59:26. With a time of 57:51, Russian Ramilia Burangulova (1st in 2003) won the women's Masters, and finished tenth overall. Seven-time Crim winner Tatyana Pozdynyakova, 50, from Ukraine finished second, eleventh overall. Russian, Tatiana Titova, 40, finished third at 1:02:04.

Boaz Cheboiywo, 25, of Ypsilanti, was the top Michigan runner (49:39) finishing twelfth overall. Todd Snyder, 28 of Ann Arbor finished second (50:19), thirteenth overall. Lucus Humphrey, 24, from Rochester Hills, finished third (50:32), 14th overall.

Top Michigan female runners were Betsy Frens, 30, Kalamazoo, with a time of 58:16, twelfth overall. Denisa Costesca, 29, Wixom, came in second with a time of 1:01:35, placing fourteenth overall, and Monica Joyce, 47, of Ann Arbor (1:02:11) finished third, sixteenth overall.

Last year's winner, Tony Iniguez, of Bolingbrook, Illinois won the wheelchair event with a time of 40:00. Chad Johnson of Jeffersonville, Indiana finished second at 41:51. Last year's winner, John Brewer of Kaysville, UT was the top quad finisher with a time of 1:01:48. Christy Campbell of Kitchener, Ontario won the female wheeler race with a time of 1:16:33.

Hand crank chair racer Glen Ashlock, of Ann Arbor, MI, was the top finisher for the second year in a row with a time of 36:21. Brian Kobi of Grand Rapids, MI finished second with a time of 38:57. Jimmy Green of Saginaw, MI finished third at 42:29.

The premier 10-mile race, which continues to grow as one of the most popular races in the nation, had over 7,222 participants. The family of races, which also includes a 8K run and walk, a 5K run and walk, a one- mile run and walk, the Lois Craig Invitational for Special Olympics, and the Teddy Bear Trot; drew over 13,700 participants.
