Windsor, Bridge and Tunnel Are Back for 25th Marathon
The Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon will again
be run across international borders. Heath Meriwether,
Publisher of the Detroit Free Press, announced the course
at a Greektown Casino press conference. The course for
the 25th running of the Marathon on October 6, 2002, will
take runners over the Ambassador Bridge, along
the Windsor waterfront, and through the Detroit-Windsor
Tunnel. The course, designed by Doug Kurtis, will continue
around Belle Isle, go through historic Indian Village, through
Greektown, then finish inside Ford Field, the new home for
the Detroit Lions.According to race director Patricia Ball, Immigration and
Naturalization Service officials see the Marathon as a
symbol of safe and open borders, as a connection to the
partnership between the United States and Canada and the
sisterhood of the cities of Windsor and Detroit. In fact,
Assistant District Director of the INS, Daphiney Caganap,
will be running the marathon herself. The INS will have a booth at the Marathon Expo to allow
runners to register until the day before the event. For details
