COMMERCE TOWNSHIP (6/17/06) - Having run 2:36:42 in the Free
Press Marathon last year and a 4:26 mile earlier this year, Eric Green of
Pontiac feels comfortable at just about any distance. He proved he can
also handle a 10K at the 13th annual Julie Run.Last year, Green, 38, won this 10K in 34:30. This year race director Julie
LeBlanc changed the course, but that didn't slow him down, as he
triumphed in 33:01.
"They had a much better course this year," Green said. Last year, after
starting on the track, the 5K and the 10K ran loops in the Walled Lake
Northern High School parking lot. This year, the 10K went across the
street into a neighboring subdivision.
"I loved the changes they made," Green continued. "I'll be back next
year."
Like Green, Andrea Osika, 40, of Waterford, who won the women's 10K
in 40:10, enjoyed the course.
"I'm just getting back into running after having four children," Osika said.
"This is the first 10K I've run in four or five years."
In the 5K, Roy Setsuda, 21, a Walled Lake Central graduate who now
attends Michigan State University, won the men's race (17:13) and
Amanda Rehm, 34, of Commerce Township, captured the women's title
(23:03).
The Julie Run, sponsored by Rock Financial, raises money for the Open
Door Outreach Center, which provides emergency services (food,
clothing and referral information) to families in need, and financial
assistance for crisis needs when funds are available. It serves families
in Waterford, White Lake, West Bloomfield, Commerce and parts of
Wixom and Walled Lake.
