Mumford's the word in Michigan high school track and field. Detroit
Mumford's sprint-happy boys and girls swept Michigan High School
Athletic Association Division 1 Lower Peninsula titles June 5 at
Rockford. The meet's big news for distance fans was Saline's boys winning the
3200-meter relay in a state-finals record 7:41.27, top prep time in the
U.S. so far this season. The team's 800 split times were: Carter Bishop
1:54.7, Alex Muhs 1:59.0, Dustin Voss 1:54.2, and Neal Atzinger 1:53.0.
The Hornets needed to fly to win: five teams finished under 7:52 on this
sun-kissed day.
Delivering other top distance efforts at June 5 state meets were:
* Monroe Jefferson freshman Bekah Smeltzer sweeping D-2 girls titles in

records. Bush, bound for Michigan State University this fall, captured 10
state titles (seven track, three cross country) during her prep career.
