Prep Track Stars Brilliant on Sun-Kissed Day
By Scott Sullivan
July 2004
Michigan Runner

Mumford's the word in Michigan high school track and field. Detroit Mumford's sprint-happy boys and girls swept Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 Lower Peninsula titles June 5 at Rockford.

The meet's big news for distance fans was Saline's boys winning the 3200-meter relay in a state-finals record 7:41.27, top prep time in the U.S. so far this season. The team's 800 split times were: Carter Bishop 1:54.7, Alex Muhs 1:59.0, Dustin Voss 1:54.2, and Neal Atzinger 1:53.0. The Hornets needed to fly to win: five teams finished under 7:52 on this sun-kissed day.

Delivering other top distance efforts at June 5 state meets were:

* Monroe Jefferson freshman Bekah Smeltzer sweeping D-2 girls titles in the 3200 (a division-record 10:40.66) and 1600 (4:59.46).

* Kelloggsville senior Nicole Bush claiming D-3 girls crowns in the 1600 (4:53.35) and 3200 (10:57.16), both breaking her own division finals records. Bush, bound for Michigan State University this fall, captured 10 state titles (seven track, three cross country) during her prep career.

* Amber Smith of Ishpeming Westwood completing her four-year reign in the Upper Peninsula distance titles, sweeping the D-2 800 (2:18.59), 1600 (5:09.90) and 3200 (11:18.87).

* Vicksburg sophomore Dan Roberts winning D-2 boys titles in the 1600 (4:13.83) and 3200 (9:18.48).

* Bath senior Liam Boylan-Pett's triumphs in the 800 (a division record 1:54.06) and 1600 (4:24.10).

* Waterford Kettering junior Justin Switzer bagging the boys D-1 1600 in 4:09.11, fourth-fastest high-school time so far in the nation.

* Walled Lake Western senior Neal Naughton running a 9:08.81 to win the D-1 boys 3200.

* Davison senior Lisa Senakiewich claiming the D-1 girls 1600 in 4:51.64.
