Pictured Rocks Run for Shelter

MUNISING (6/29/03) -- Scott Carhoun celebrated the memory of his high school track coach, Dale Fountain, by winning the 11-mile Pictured Rocks Run for Shelter.

"My coach introduced me to this race," said Carhoun, 22, of Stephenson. "Before he died (in a canoe accident last summer), I promised him I'd run it with him."

Carhoun, who brought eight other Fountain-coached runners to the race with him, went off course briefly. "He went straight where he should have turned," said eventual-runnerup Rick Stefanovic. "I yelled at him and he got back on course. I held the lead for awhile, but he took it back."

Carhoun finished the challenging course in 1:06:03. "Coach got me into running," Carhoun said. "He would have been excited to see me win."

Stefanovic, 41, of Milwaukee, was masters winner in 1:07:50. Jim Cihak, 53, of Marquette, placed third overall in 1:11:59.

Liz Hendershott, 37, of Ortonville, won the women's 11-mile with a 1:21:22 PR.

"I ran this race six or seven years ago, before I had most of my kids," she said. Her brood includes five-year-old triplets, three- and six-year-olds, plus 12-year-old Jamie Hendershott, who finished second in her age group in the five-mile with a 38:31.

Like Carhoun, Liz Hendershott was followed by two masters runners: Jeanette Robinson, 43, of Dewitt (1:24:59) and Sally Schumacher, 42, of Waukesha (1:25:17).

Grand Valley State University junior Dave Harvey, 20, of Munising, won the men's five-mile race in 25:58. Northern Michigan University junior Johanna Delorey, 20, of Marquette, claimed the women's title in 33:21.

Race director Lynn Chamberlain said this year's temperatures, in the low 60s, were a blessing. "Last year it was almost 90 degrees," she said.

Both runs raised money for Harbor House, a domestic violence shelter serving Alger and Marquette counties. For complete results, visit www.gaultracemanagement.com. MR
