WAYNE (10/4) -- The number 13 scares some people,
especially when it shows up a few weeks before Halloween.
But the 500 participants in the 13th annual Red October Run
found nothing to shoo them off. Plus a few won shoes.
Both the 5K and 10K, which started at Oakwood Annapolis
Hospital, headed off into a chilly wind. For the last mile,
runners had the wind at their backs. That and a pancake
course made conditions ripe for a PR day.
Brandie Fitzsimmons, 23, who runs for Washtenaw
Community College, went home with a personal record and
new Mizuno shoes. (Overall champs in both races won the
latter.)
"I kind of expected a PR," Fitzsmmons said. "I didn't expect
the shoes."
She clocked 20:16 in the 5K. Masters queen Connie
Scaparo, 40, of Canton, finished second overall in 23:09.
Mary Estes-Dotani, 18, of Allen Park, was right behind
(23:11).
In the men's 5K, Doug Ogden, 40, of Chelsea, triumphed in
17:07. Kurt Bartel, 32, of Northville, and Doug Goodhue, 61,
of Milford, finished second and third in 17:23 and 18:02.
"I'm disappointed I didn't break 18 minutes," Goodhue said.
Craig McCardell, 34, of Canton, claimed the men's 10K
shoes in 36:26. Then came Andrew Schillaci, 25, of Lansing
(37:38) and top master Mike Sellon, 49, of Sarnia, Ont.
(38:37).
In the women's 10K, Donna Olson 53, of Bloomfield Hills
(46:21) topped Elizabeth Person, 23, of Bloomfield (46:29)
and Julie Frasier, 46, of Allen Park (47:03).
