Vincents Run for Roses at Jackson Race

JACKSON (6/14/03) -- Going into the final mile of the Rose Run 5K, Christine Vincent felt content to settle for second place. Her son, Zach, 14, running with her, had other ideas. "I was getting comfortable with my pace," recalled Christine, 39, of Jackson, "when Zach said, 'Let's get her.'"

The "her" in question was Jennifer Phelan, 17, of Horton, who had led from the start. And though Phelan has trained with Christine and Zach, the Vincents showed no mercy, whipping past her with 200 yards to go.

"I was dead by then," Phelan said.

Christine won the women's 5K, sponsored by DeLaet Design as part of the 33rd annual Physicians Health Plan Rose Run, in 20:28. Zach clocked 20:29, good for third in his 13-14 age group. Christine's son, Joshua, 11, placed second in his 12-and-under division with a 23:06. The youngest Vincent, five-year-old Seth, ran the Kids Fun Run. Phelan, who will be a senior at Hanover High School this fall, finished second in 20:34. Jordan Clark, 18, of Jackson, took third in 20:38. Susan Chapel, 43, of Jackson, was masters winner in 22:01.

Matt Schroeder, 32, of Royal Oak, claimed the men's 5K title in 16:13. Felix Brooks, 45, of Kalamazoo, finished second overall (16:28) and first master. Jesse Pagels, 27, of Kalamazoo, crossed in 16:30.

In the Orthopaedic Rehab 10K, David Kimeli, 31, of Lansing, was repeat winner. But he had to run faster this year.

"Too fast," said Kimeli, a Kenyan who started running while in college at Notre Dame. In this year's race, he faced plenty of competition.

"Up until two miles he had three runners with him," said race director Mike McGlynn, who watched from the pace car. "At about 2-1/2 miles, two guys dropped off."

Kimeli still had Mike Scannell, 41, of Grand Blanc, right behind him until four miles. Then he pulled away to prevail in 31:56, 58 seconds faster than last year's time.

"I didn't want to run so fast on such a mountainous course," said Kimeli. Scannell took second (first master) in 32:19, with Aaron Usher, 24, of Gregory, third in 33:08.

Women's winner Seana Larson, 33, of Dexter, took note of the "mountains" and 80-degree heat too. "This is one of the hardest 10K's I've ever run," said Larson, who finished in 37:12.

Dawn Bohlen, 35, of Jackson, took second in 40:46, and Lisa Hesse, 41, of Ann Arbor, third in 41:29.

The Rose Run included the Jackson Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine 4-Mile Walk. For more information, visit http://www.roserun.org. MR
