__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"What Roger Bannister did is the single greatest athletic achievement of
the 20th century.....Let me tell you why I say this about Bannister. I say
this about Bannister because of the spirit of optimism that it gave to
people. The thing about running is everyone can run, and in every
country of the world, people do run. That is an international event and
for many many years people said the 4 minute mile was undoable. It's
like when you land a guy on the moon - you land a lot of guys on the
moon after that, but the first guy, that's a real big deal. I just think the
spirit of optimism that that gave people- like climbing Mt. Everest - no
one wants to do it but when you do it, it's a big deal. ...Again I think
running and jumping is what everyone in the world has in common."
--Tony Kornheiser, Pardon the Interuption television show, March 23,
2007, Bannister's 79th birthday. Sunday, May 6, was the 53rd
anniversary of Bannister's sub-4 mile.
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: HILLSDALE "GINA" RELAYS - This week
we feature two shows of the thirteen planned: watch Hillsdale alum Paul
Aufdemberge cruise to an easy win in the "WYLD Bill 5K" (row 1, column
3), see Grand Vally State's Mandii Zember race to victory over Notre
Dame's Molly Huddle in the Dream Mile, and hear the roar when Rob
Meyers runs a sub 4:00 minute mile-- the first miles run on the Ken
Herrick Track. http://michiganrunner.tv/2007hillsdale/
__/ 5/3 RIVER BANK RUN HISTORICAL PANEL FEATURES FORMER

__/ MICHIGAN STATE ALUM PAUL TEREK WINS COMBINED EVENTS
CHALLENGE - "2004 Olympian Paul Terek led the men's decathlon at
the halfway point and went on to win the event convincingly over the
weekend at the 20th edition of the Multistars IAAF Combined Events
Challenge meeting in Desenzano, Italy. Terek tallied 8,134 points in
distancing himself from runner-up and former Asian champion Vitaliy
Smirnov from Uzbekistan, who completed the event with 7,825 points.
This marked Terek's best performance since setting his personal best
score of 8,312 points in 2004.
Terek, who has battled injury problems the last two years, will return to
California to begin training for the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track &
Field Championships in Indianapolis, June 20-24. For more information
on the Multistars IAAF Combined Events Challenge in Italy, visit http://

__/ TRAILS, TRI, CLEVELAND'S 30TH AND KIDS ON TAP FOR MAY
19-20
-- CRIM KIDS CLASSIC, FLINT, SATURDAY, MAY 19 - The Crim for
Kids has a race for kids from 0 to 14, from the diaper dash to the toddler
trot, quarter mile, half mile and one mile races. The one day festival also
includes free entry for kids to Flint's Planetarium, the Flint Institute of Arts
and the Sloan Museum. Events begin at 11:00. For a list of more
activities and online registration see http://crim.org.
-- SILVER VALLEY TRAIL RUN, EAST TAWAS, SATURDAY, MAY 19 -
The Corsair Trail Council sponsors the 10th annual Silver Valley Trail
Run. Both the 7K run or 5K fun run and walk are in the beautiful Huron
National Forest, near East Tawas Michigan. The course is one of
Michigan's most scenic and you'll want to make time for delights of the
East Tawas Waterfront after the race. For information contact Dan
Kammer, (989) 469-3553.
-- RITE AID CLEVELANDN MARATHON & 10K, CLEVELAND,
SUNDAY, MAY 20 - One of the nation's most competitive 10K's is among
the events of the 30th Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon & 10K scheduled for
Sunday, May 20. You can also choose the half-marathon which, along
with the marathon, showcases Cleveland's waterfront and scenic
neighborhoods. The Cleveland Museum of Art has a special exhibit:
Monet in Normandy, which has been extended through May 28. Of
course, you'll want to make time for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, for
which discount tickets are available for runners.

-- XTERRA LAST STAND TRIATHLON/DUATHLON, AUGUSTA,
SUNDAY, MAY 20 - XTERRA Events feature mountain bikes and trail
running and competitors coming from far and wide to collect XTERRA
series points. The triathlon is a 1/2 mile swim in Fort Custer's Eagle
Lake, 12.5 mountain bike and a 4 mile trail run. The duathlon substitutes
a 2 mile run for the swim. Fort Custer State Park in August near Battle
Creek is reason enough to tackle either the duathlon or the triathlon.
Another reason is the guaranteed good time characteristic of Elite
Endeavors events.

__/ ED KOZLOFF ON HENRY RONO'S RACING IN MICHIGAN,
SUMMER 1981 - Motor City Striders President Ed Kozloff remembers
the ZooByDoo 3 Mile at the Detroit Zoo, June 20, 1981 and he has the
records to back up those memories. The race drew 800 runners and a
deep field. Among the racers was Henry Rono, who placed second to
Pat Davey's 13:55 that day. "The men's field was so deep," says Ed,
"That the 10th man ran a 15:37." The 100th finisher clocked 18:45. Ed
alerted us to Total Runner's photo of Henry Rono, racing in Europe
wearing a Total Runner singlet.
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD:
-- SOUTHFIELD - We stopped by Total Runner in Southfield to see the
store's photo of former world record holder Henry Rono, running a 1981
5000m race in Europe just before he broke his own world record. Rono
wore a Total Runner singlet in the photo. We had a chance to talk with
store manager Paul Aufdemberge there. Paul had visited his daughter's
school earlier that day and her classmates were not shy about asking
questions such as "How tall are you?"
Paul says being tall is an issue as being taller than typical elite runners
makes it harder to run hills.
After our visits, Total Runner owner Dave Howell sent us a clipping from
a December 1981 issue of "The Runner" which described meet directors
as refusing an out-of-shape Rono entry:
"'On July 4 in Oslo,' said one coach, 'I saw him get double lapped in a
5,000 and run over 16 minutes.'
"Meet directors wanted no part of him. 'They gave me a very hard time,'
Rono complained at the World Cup in Rome. 'They said I was fat.'
Falling back on his three-year old PRs, Rono talked his way into races.
Though he was refused expense money, Rono would show up-- and
how do you tell a 27:22 10,000-meter runner to go home?
"Well, Rono got lean and mean in a hurry. In August he ran 27:40.78 for
10,000 meters and 13:12.15 for 5,000-- but passed up the World Cup in
early September because of a dispute with African officials. Rono's
personal World Cup came the following week when in five days he ran
the 5,000 in 13:12.47, 13:12.34 and 13:06.2- which broke his world
record by 2.2 seconds."
-- DETROIT - Michigan Runner TV Executive Producer, Art McCafferty
and I were guests on WJR radio's Internet Advisor show. Internet
Advisor Gary Baker and Host Foster Braun asked us to tell listeners
about Michigan Runner TV and our other Internet TV channels. Over the
years Michigan Runner TV and its sister channels has been able to
bring to viewers the action of running, road racing, track and field and
cross country. Running doesn't have a cable channel to itself as golf
does, but Michigan Runner TV and Running Canada TV fills the void for
increasing numbers of viewers each year. The most-watched show is
the 2006 Around the Bay Road Race, Hamilton, Ontario, with 38,000
viewers
