Hell's Bells! Run Draws Record Field

HELL (8/13/05) - Never before have so many well-meaning souls voluntarily run through Hell.

With 2,070 registrants, the Run Thru Hell 10- and 4.8-mile races broke last year's record turnout of 1,950. Throngs crowded Hell Creek Ranch on a cool but extremely-humid morning.

"Who needs water stations when you can drink the air?" joked Marty Rosendahl, 27, of Rochester.

Rosendahl, who runs for the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, won the men's 10-mile in 54:43, beating runnerup Tom Clifford, 22, of Ypsilanti (55:34) and Chris Wehrman, 29, of Chicago (55:42).

"I was hoping to run in the 52s," said Rosendahl, "but the course took me by surprise. I was warned it was tough, but I had no idea it was that tough!"

Clifford, an Eastern Michigan University senior, stayed with Rosendahl through the first half.

"At five miles we were together," said Rosendahl. "He opened a lead during the sixth mile, then I came back on him. After six miles we hit an uphill; I felt good, so I put the hammer down. He never came back on me after that."

Clifford's sister, Katie Jazwinski, 26, of Dexter, had no peer in the women's 10 mile. The ex-University of Michigan star's 1:02:52 put her comfortably ahead of her closest rivals, Megan Swick, 18, of Lansing (1:06:52) and Megan Young, 17, of Rochester Hills (1:09:28).

"I ran pretty much identically to last year," said Jazwinski, who won the 2004 10-mile in 1:01:57. "I started at a comfortable pace and maintained it. I felt strong."

"She's awesome," said Clifford of his sister's performance. "Katie has always been a positive influence on me. She got me into running when I was in eighth grade, and I thank her a lot for that."

Top masters in the 10-mile were David Hess, 40, of Curtice (1:00:33) and Becky Mincheff, 42, of Oregon, Ohio (1:14:50). Doug Kurtis, 53, of Northville (1:08:25) and Donna Olson, 55, of Bloomfield Hills (1:17:31) were grand-master winners. Jim Carlton, 62, of Union Lake (1:07:19) and Cora Hill, 62, of Southfield (1:48:24) claimed senior-master crowns.

In the 4.8-mile run, Timothy Howse, 18, of Livonia (26:12) edged Peter Christmas, 17, of Ann Arbor (26:17). Theresa Murier, 29, of Toledo (29:03)led the women, followed by Kalli Williams, 20, of Ann Arbor (31:28).

Masters winners were Scott Millis, 45, of Chatham, Ont. (28:18) and Sue Parks, 49, of Muncie, Ind. (32:50). Toledo residents Ed Osborn, 51 (30:18)and Kay Heinrichs, 58, were grand-master champs. Senior- master titlists were Don Owens, 61, of Williamston (34:19) and Janet Wallen, 64, of Flushing(45:42).
