Chips Cash in at Seaway Run

MUSKEGON (6/28/03) -- "Chips" on your shoulder? Not at this year's Chronicle Seaway Run.

Past and present Central Michigan University Chippewas left competitors behind on this overcast, lovely-for-running day.

Current Chip Jon Langworthy, 21, and alum Janet Becker, 29, earned Michigan Runner of the Year race series points and titles in the 15K, steaming home in 50:52 and 56:30 respectively.

Brook Creed didn't run on anyone's shoulder either. The new CMU grad was women's 5K winner, and ninth overall, in 17:22.

Only Rob Moore, who owns this race, managed to break up the Central stranglehold. Moore, an Ohioan who vacations here with family each summer, won for the 16th time in the Seaway's 22-year history, claiming the 5K in 15:47.

There were 695 5K and 363 10K runners. Add 423 5K walkers and the event drew a record 1,481 participants. Langworthy, who hopes to make Central's star-studded team next season, completed the lake-hugging long course nearly two minutes faster than runnerup Chris Glowacki, 48, of Freeland, masters champion in 52:43.

Next came two more runners old enough to be Langworthy's father: Craig Kingma, 38, of Jenison (53:41) and Jim Lanciaux, 41, of Fremont (53:46).

Becker, winner here in 2000, outdistanced 1999 champion Emily Blakeslee, 21, of Rockford (1:00:11). Another Rockford alum, Aimee Keenan, 21, claimed third in 1:01:25. Maureen Pluger, 40, of Hudsonville, was masters winner and fourth overall in 1:01:30. "Aimee and I ran close all the way. What a lovely girl; she encouraged me," Pluger said.

Moore, 38, completed the 5K with a comfortable gap over Mona Shores High School senior-to-be Tim Kaijala (16:43) and Joe Lynn, 21, of Muskegon (16:46).

Top men's masters were Kevin Deyo, 44, of Traverse City (17:07), Terry Tatro, 52, of Hart (17:58) and David Martin, 40, Muskegon (18:23).

Creed spoiled Jeanne Spitler-Dykman's bid for a sixth Seaway title. Spitler-Dykman, 33, beat her winning time last year with an 18:01, but Creed's speed killed. Shelly Mattson, 40, of Grand Haven, was masters queen with a 19:56. Next came Sheila Brunner, 47, of Manistee (21:18) and Linda Fleeger-Borck, 54, of Grand Rapids (21:38)

Also impressive were Evan Peterson, 5, of Beaver Creek (37:40) and Glen Cooper, 88, of Baldwin (46:11).

Leaders could watch the rest of us finish or take in the nearby Muskegon Summer Celebration parade starring clowns and inflatable dinosaurs. Not much difference in our case.
