Silver Valley Trail Runs: Glancys Fancy Silver Valley Runs

TAWAS (9/28) -- Director Butch Short joked he might change the Silver Valley Trail Run to the "Silver-Haired Run" because so many of the 152 entries were over 40.

He might also consider renaming this Corsair Trail Council-sponsored race the "Glancy Family Run." Emily Glancy, 20, won the women's 7K; brother John, 16, was men's runnerup; and sister Leah, 22, finished first in the 5K fun run.

Father Mike Glancy, 50, of Tawas, who ran the 5K in 28 minutes, had a less-than-subtle way to motivate his offspring. "He said he'd cut off my college money if I didn't get out of bed and run with him," said Emily, a sophomore at Calvin College. That threat didn't drive much fear down the spine of Leah, who graduated from Michigan Tech University last spring, but it did seem to fire up the others.

Emily won big, finishing the 7K (4.5 miles) in 32:00. Amy Short, Butch's wife, finished second in 34:05. Michelle Dvorak of Burton defended her masters crown, and was third overall, in 35:05.

Tawas High School junior John Glancy led the 7K after four miles. Then Dennis Fabian, 39, of Rochester, last year's runnerup, passed him. "I knew he was a lot younger than me," said Fabian. "And I knew I wouldn't outkick him because I don't have a lot of leg speed. So at about 3-1/2 miles I went for it."

Fabian finished in 26:51, Glancy in 26:57. Third-place Michael Frank (27:11) earned his second-straight masters win.

"It was very hilly, with some good downhills," said Fabian. "All the trails were beautiful."

Elizabeth Swift, 27, of West Branch, second in the women's 5K, agreed. "The terrain was nice and varied," she said. "It had plenty of hills to challenge you and tons of beautiful trees. It was a great race."

The runs take place on the Corsair Trail System in the Huron Valley National Forest. "Proceeds go toward maintaining and grooming the 40 miles of hiking and cross-country trails the Council is responsible for," Short said.
