International Stars Run Hot, Cold at First-Year Race

GRAND RAPIDS (4/19) -- Africans were hot and a Russian complained about the cold at the first-annual Takin' It to the Streets 5K.

Women went first at this successor to the late Pietro's Run Fasta Eat Pasta 5K, with Anastasia Zubova czarina in 16:20. Though the Russian Olympic hopeful said the mid-40's dampness slowed her, she beat top Michiganian Betsy Frens (16:56) and claim $600 for her effort.

Michigan Runner of the Year Laurie Decker of Cadillac (18:49) edged Wyoming's Laura Vroon (13:52) for top masters money, $150.

Training partners Musa Gwanzura (Zimbabwe) and David Kipngetich (Kenya) took turns leading the men's race, Gwanzura prevailing. Both covered the multi-turned course in 14:32.

Justin Pfreunder of Grand Rapids was top Michigander and third overall (15:35). Bryan Alfonso of Clarkston (16:54) was masters king.

Lake Michigan Credit Union took over sponsorship of this renamed race in memory Mark Nader, late director of the Run Fasta Eat Pasta 5K. The original, one of Runner's World magazine's top-100 U.S. road races, was sponsored for 15 years by Pietro's restaurants.

Runs started and ended at Ottawa Hills High School, Nader's alma mater, included a stretch on the old Pietro's course, and drew 729 finishers (449 men, 280 women). For complete results, visit www.classicrace.com. MR
