Treece Wins 5000 Meter Title at Nike Outdoor Nationals
June 14, 2007 Greensboro, North Carolina Michigan Runner
Sets Meet Record 16:38 in First EventFootlocker Finalist, Marissa Treece, a senior at Glenlake HS in Maple City, Michigan, ran
away from the field almost immediately and took the first title at the Nike Outdoor
Championships being held in Greensboro, NC in a meet record of 16.38. After a day of
very cloudy weather in the 60's, the cool evening of 68F felt as it were in the 50's during
the running of the 5 sections of the boys-girls 5000's. Treece, who had been stranded in a airport for 11 hours, showed no ill effects. She
wanted to run both of the seeded section of the Girls One Mile and Girls 2 Mile, but she
found out that she could only run one and decided to run the 5000 tonite and go after the
HS Girls Michigan record of 4.45 on Saturday evening. She plans to run as aggressivly
in the mile as she ran tonight. In the boys 5000, Adam Vess of Ct, lead the leaders thru most of the laps. With 800m
to go Super Soph Doug Smith of NJ took the lead and appeared to be the winner, until
senior Vess unleashed a 65 last 400m to win in a very respectable and Nike Outdoor
Record, 14.38 to Smith's 14.40.
